Privateers move ahead of Sackville in tight playoff race

The Liverpool Privateers played exceptional defence Saturday afternoon in Brookfield and in the process shut-out the Brookfield Elks 3-0 behind the goaltending of Zach Nauss who recorded his second shut-out of the season.  The teams played to a scoreless draw in the opening period before the Privateers Joe Osborne netted what proved to be the game winner less than 6 minutes into the second period.  It stayed that way until there was slightly more than two minutes left in the middle frame when Owen Osborne connected.  The game saw only one more goal and it went to Malcom Bussey playing his first game of the season for Liverpool with 7:43 having elapsed in the third.  The win allowed Liverpool to overtake Sackville for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Fred Fox Division as the Privateers are now 8-8-2 on the season and the Blazers 8-11-1.  The Elks are only two and three points ahead of the Privateers and Blazers for third place with a record of 9-6-2 for 20 points.  For the Elks and Privateers, it was their fourth meeting of the season with Liverpool earlier scoring a pair of 3-2 wins and the Elks a 4-3 win.  The final 2 games between the two teams will more than likely have huge playoff implications.

Membertou  7     Port Hawkesbury   2

The Membertou Jr. Miners now have only 9 games remaining in the regular season, so their 7-2 win at home Saturday over the Port Hawkesbury Strait Pirates was a huge weight off their backs as it allowed the Jr. Miners to pull within 2 points of both the Strait and Pictou for the final two playoff positions in the Fred Fix Division.  The Jr. Miners outshot the Strait 44-42 but scored when necessary taking 1-0 and 5-0 leads after the first and second periods.  Alec Campbell’s goal 1:07 into the contest gave Membertou a 1-0 lead after one before the Jr. Miners exploded for four markers in the second off the sticks of Coby McCarron, Liam Burke, Jarrett Hicks on the power-play and Alexander Chenhall with his first of two in the game.  Gregor Yoell made it 5-1 for the Pirates mid-way through the third before Chenhall with his second of the game 1:01 later put the Jr. Miners back in front by five goals.  Connor MacIntyre then put the Jr. Miners up 7-1 before Matthew Ellis scored the game’s final goal for the Strait with less than a minute to play.  Port Hawkesbury returned home with aa record of 9-7-1 while the Jr. Miners are now 8-12-1.
