Fisher tallies hat-trick for Pens

The East Hants Penguins, Antigonish AA Munro Jr. Bulldogs and the Port Hawkesbury Strait Pirates were all winners in the three games played in the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League Friday evening.  The following is a more extensive review of the games.

East Hants   6      Capstone Colts   3

Bruen Fisher’s three goals paced the Penguins to a critical win as they moved into a fire place tie with the Colts in the Fred Fox Division.  The Colts jumped early and paced themselves to a 2-0 lead after the opening period but their scoring ended after Tyler Puma scored with 1:59 to go in the first.  Trayner McCulloch scored the colts opening goal.  In the second the Penguins Fisher scored twice including the game winner with 5:44 to play in the middle session while Morgan Lake added the Pens other marker.  Devin Meagher put the Pens up 4-2 and then Fisher scored his third of the night.  Logan Colter who also added a pair of assists finished the game’s scoring with 55 seconds to play in regulation.  The Penguins outshot the Colts 31-28.

Antigonish   5   Pictou   1

The Scotians continued their slump losing their 5th game in their past 6.  The AA Munro Jr. Bulldogs were all over the Scotians in the opening period as they took a 4-1 lead on three consecutive power-play goals from Zachary Lorette, Ethan Twolan and Kyler Lohnes while Matthew Bercovici made it 4-0 Bulldogs when the teams were even strength.  Zach Houston tallied the lone Scotians goal with under 5 minutes to play in the opening period.  The only other goal of the game was scored by the Jr. Bulldogs Connor Doherty mid-way through the third period.  If you examined the scoresheet, it wasn’t hard to tell why the teams did not have a lot of time to score as 303 minutes in penalties were called during the 60 minutes and this included 8 fighting majors, 13 game misconducts, 7 misconducts and 1 Gross Missconduct.  Luke Young of the Scotians finished the game with 37 penalty minutes and Sam Grant with 35 for the Bulldogs who saw their record improve to 19-3-1 for 39 points.

Port Hawkesbury  8     Cumberland  4

The Blues led this game 2-1 after the opening frame on goals from Jayden Matheson and Callum MccLellan while Cadyn Power tallied for the Strait.  The Strait Pirates took a 3-2 lead in the second when Matthew Ellis and Dave Matthews both scored but that lead only lasted 4:06 after the Blues struck for another pair, this time from Aiden Fisher and Daniel MacKenzie to go in front 4-3.  The Pirates Blake Hadley and Gregor Yoell with the game winner put the Strait back in front 5-4 after forty minutes.  Yoell who finished the game with 3 goals scored his final two in the third period while Cameron J. MacDonald tallied as well for the Strait to make the final 8-4.  Jason Johnson and Matthew Raike both collected three assists for the Strait who are 12-9-2 on the season and hanging onto third place in the Sid Rowe by 2 points.
