Antigonish wins 13th in a row

Bulldogs win their 13th in a row and Elks still having a heckuva time finding the net…the following is a rundown of action in the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League from Saturday Feb 11/23.

Antigonish Jr. Bulldogs   4     Port Hawkesbury Strait Pirates  0

The Jr. Bulldogs won their 13th consecutive game in Port Hawkesbury Saturday evening blanking the Strait Pirates 4-0.  The Bulldogs were already off to a hot-start at 9-3-1 when they began their 13 game winning streak which leaves them now with a record of 22-3-1 with only four regular season games remaining in their 22-23 schedule.  Cody MacEachern recorded his 3rd shut-out of the season for the Bulldogs and has a 13-2-0 record in th 15 games he has played with Antigonish.  He also has 1.83 Goals Against Average while having stopped 395 of the 423 shots he has faced.  Zachary Lorette continued his torrid scoring with the Jr. Bulldogs scoring twice for the winners giving him 12 goals in his past 11 games.  Darren Waterman and Luke Baldwin scored the other 2 goals for the Jr. Bulldogs who have now moved 8 points ahead of the Eskasoni Jr. Eagles in the race for first place in the Sid Rowe Division.  Antigonish outshot the Strait 37-22.

Capstone Colts   4     Brookfield Elks   0

The Colts are staying two points ahead of the East Hants Penguins in the chase for first in the Fred Fox Division.  The Colts blanked the Brookfield Elks 4-0 who have managed only 7 goals in their past 9 games in which they have gone 1-7-1.  They have also been shut-out in five of their last nine games.  Until this slump, the Elks were 9-5-2 but even through this horrible stretch of games, the Elks remain only 3 points out of the fourth and final playoff position in the Fox Division after East Hants sidelined Liverpool 4-1.  The Colts were ready to go from the opening face-off as Will MacRae, Cooper Puma and Stephen Warwick put them up 3-0 after the opening period.  Cooper Puma’s 2nd goal of the game was the last goal scored in the game to give the 20-3-1 Colts their 4-0 verdict.  The Bulldogs outshot the Strait 37-22.

    East Hants   4     Liverpool    1

The Penguins do not say die “easily” as they won to stay within 2 points of the Colts for first in the Fred Fox Division.  The Privateers meanwhile who were hoping to overpass Sackville for third place failed in their 4-1 loss.  The Penguins took no hostages as they ran up a 4-0 lead after forty minutes, were held scoreless in the third while allowing the Privateers their only goal of the game to Malcom Bussey.  In the opening two periods, Blake Irvine and Brody Fraser scored to make it 2-0 Pens after one period and Bruen Fisher and Nick Veinot tallied in the second to put the Pens ahead 4-0.  The 2 clubs concluded their 6 game regular season schedule Saturday evening with East Hants winning four games, 3 by 4-3 margins including one in overtime while Liverpool won another 4-3 in a shoot-out and another by a 4-2 score allowing East Hants to outscore Liverpool 21-18 in the six games and finish with a 4-1-1 record agains the Privateers while Liverpool went 2-3-1.  If these same two teams collide in the opening round of the playoffs, it promises to be a “beauty” with a sell-out potential for both arenas every night until their series is concluded.  Before this happens, the Privateers have to overtake Sackville for third place who they currently trail by a single point going into acton Sunday.
