Jr, Miners record memorable overtime win
It is a long way from the finish line in the 24-25 NSJHL Season but if tiebreakers are required to decided playoff standings at the end of the season, the Pictou County Scotians will certainly look back on Saturday, Sept 21/24 in only their second game, with another 28 to play. The reason is because the Scotians somehow gave up a 4-0 lead in the first period and allowed the Membertou Jr. Miners to rally for a 5-4 sudden-death overtime win in Membertou Saturday evening.
Everything looked fine in the early going as Wyatt Spence scored a pair of goals in the first while Joseph Mason and Jack Tompkins added singles to give Pictou their 4-0 lead. With only five second to play in the opening frame, Charlie Joe Francis started the downward spiral for the Scotians as the first period concluded with Pictou on top 4-1. To make matters even worse the Scotians played as strong second and kept the Jr. Miners scoreless and the score 4-1 Pictou after forty minutes. One minute into the third period, Adam Hicks tallied to bring the Jr. Miners to within a pair. Ty Oliver brought the Jr. Miners to within goal with 10:11 left in regulation before Drew Baldwin who finished the night with two goals and two assists scored on a penalty shot with 8:35 left in regulation to tie the game at 4-4 and eventually spend it into sudden-death overtime. It took Baldwin only 36 seconds in overtime to score to give the Jr. Miners a highly charged 5-4 win. The Jr. Miners outshot the Scotians 42-30.
