Colts remain red-hot - lead series 2-0

The Liverpool Privateers have dug themselves a deep hole than I am sure they wanted as they have fallen behind 2-0 in their Best-of-Seven Fox Divisional Semi-Final with the Capstone Colts following 4-0 and 3-1 losses on Friday at C.F.B. Shearwater and Saturday at Queens Place Emera Centre.  Games 3 and 4 in this series will be played Wednesday night in Shearwater and Friday night in Liverpool with a Game 5 if necessary back in Shearwater Saturday night.  The Colts won their 10th and 11th consecutive games going back to the regular season with a 4-0 win Friday.  Special Teams were dominant for the Colts in the first period as they notched 2 power-play goals and added a short-handed marker to lead 3-0 after twenty minutes.  Cooper Puma and Brady Crossley scored the power-play markers while Brayden Hooper-Richard scored short-handed for the Colts.  Griffin Peers added the Colts fourth and final goal of the night with under five minutes to play in the game.

Saturday in Liverpool, the Colts scored two more powers-play goals while outshooting the Privateers 41-28.  Cooper Puma and Brady Crossley both scored their second goals of the series while Tyler Puma scored in the third.  The lone Liverpool goal came from the stick of Jude Greenwood.  The Colts have now outshot the Privaters 75-46 in the 2 games heading into Game 3 Wednesday.

McHenry 3 points - in Pens 3-1 win

The Sackville Blazers played five more regular season games than the East Hants Penguins and finished at 14-7-1 while the Pens concluded at 10-7 but when it comes to playoff hockey, as well all know nothing is certain as the Penguins came out strong Friday March 11 in the opener of their Best-of-Seven Fred Fox Divisional Semi-Final defeating the Blazers 3-1 in Lantz while outshooting the Blazers 40-26.  Games 2 and 3 revert back to Sackville Monday March 14 and Thursday March 17.  The big trouble for Sackville were the two power-play goals they allowed the Penguins in the third period as Brody Fraser tallied one including the game winner at 11:15 while Deegen Noble was serving a minor for hooking and the insurance goal was scored by Evan McHenry while Trey Faulkner was off for slashing.  McHenry also added a pair of assists while Bruen Fisher who scored the other Pens goal also recorded an assist as did Fraser whose goal was also a power-play in the first period.  The only Blazers goal all night was scored by Noah healy with 2:24 to play in the opening frame. Sackville had defeated East Hants 4-1 in their only regular season game played between the two clubs but that game is immaterial now and the Blazers will have to come up with four wins before East Hants can register 3 of their own in order to advance to the Fred Fox Divisional Final.

Preview of Jr. Miners-Pictou series

The Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League’s Divisional Semi-Finals begin Thursday night in Trenton as the Pictou County Scotians entertain the Membertou Jr. Miners in a 6:30 start.  The Scotians and Jr. Miners clashed four times during the regular season with the Jr. Miners winning 6-4 and 6-1 and the Scotians 4-3 and 3-2, both via a shoot-out.  The Scotians will be leaning heavily on net minder Brandon Connors who finished with a 7-1-0 win-loss record during the regular season while stopping 252 of a possible 265 shots for a .951 save percentage and a 1.55 GAA while in the process collecting three shut-outs.  The Scotians averaged 3.5 goals a game during the season while allowing on average 3 goals a game. It will be the Scotians defence and goaltending which has been standing out as they had only a single two-digit goal scorer in Connor Aucoin who scored 13 times and added 13 assists.  Thomas Kennaley scored 9 times and Matt Carson 8 times while helping out with 11 others.

 
As for the Jr. Miners, it will be their offence who will have to carry them as they had four players who scored more than 50% of their goals in Blake Cox, Nathaniel Fuller, Josh MacKay and Ashton Paul.  The four tallied 42 of the 78 goals scored by the Jr. Miners with cox leading the way with 14 and Fuller with 12.  As for goaltending, net minders Spencer Shebib and Hunter Chenhall split duties down the middle with each collecting one shut-out.  Shebib had a 2.84 GAA and Chenhall a 3.10 GAA.
 
Games 2 and 3 in this series will be played Saturday night in Membertou and back in Trenton Sunday night at 6:30 p.m.

Jr. Miners-Pictou open in Pictou Thurs.

Fox and Rowe Division Best-of-Seven Semi-Finals now set to go

 
It will be the East Hants Penguins and the Sackville Blazers and the Liverpool Privateers going up against the Capstone Colts in the Best-of-Seven Fred Fox Division Semi-Finals after the Pens and Privateers advanced Saturday night. First off in Liverpool:
 
Liverpool  6   Valley Maple Leafs  1
 
The Privateers outshot the Maple Leafs 158-69 over the 3 games in their Best-of-Five Mini Series or an average of 52-23 per game.  They also outscored the Leafs 21-8 including 6-1 in the series clincher Saturday night at Queens Place Emera Centre.  Alec Howie led the way for the Privateers with a pair of second period goals while assisting on two others.  Joe Osborne and Carson Gallant scored a pair in the first period while Daniel Kline and Riley Hurlburt scored power-play goals in the third period for Liverpool.  Kyle Slingerland scored in the second for the Leafs, 19 seconds after Howie’s first goal put the Privateers up 3-0.  Osborne also collected a pair of assists for the Privateers.  The Best-of-Seven Schedule between the Privateers and Colts with the Colts having home-ice advantage is being worked on.
 
East Hants  7    Brookfield Elks  3
 
The Penguins swept the Elks in three straight, their third win coming Saturday in Brookfield by a score of 7-3.  The Pens took a 3-0 lead after twenty minutes and it stayed that way until Luke MacDonald’s goal for the Elks early in the third period made it 3-1.  Then in a span of 1:59, Sean Freeman scored the game winner for the Penguins, Coady Jollymore-Godfrey brought the Elks back to within a pair before Devin Meagher scored his second of the game to put the Penguins ahead 5-2.  Later in the third Evan McHenry scored his 2nd of the game and Jollymore-Godfrey added his second of the game in a span of 37 seconds to make it 6-3 Penguins.  The final goal of the game came from the stick of the Pens Brody Fraser to make the final 7-3.  The Pens other goal was scored by Noah Parent. Meagher also added an assist for the Pens and Logan Colter connected for three assists for East Hants who outshot the Elks 50-39.  The Elks were outscored 19-5 in the three games and outshot 157-115.  East Hants and Sackville open their Best-of-Seven Fred Fox Divisional Semi-Final Friday night in Lantz at 7:30 before returning to Sackville Monday night March 14 at 7:30 p.m.
 
Port Hawkesbury  4   Eskasoni Jr. Eagles  1
 
MacQueen Kendall scored with only 3 seconds left in the opening period to put the Jr. Eagles ahead 1-0 after twenty minutes but it ended up being the only goal of the game for the Jr. Eagles and Cameron Gillis and Gregor Yoell scored in the second period for the Strait and with the Pirates leading 2-1, Cullen MacEachern and Danny Gillis scored in the final 2:34 of the third to give the Strait Pirates their 4-1 win and a sweep of their Sid Rowe Best-of-Five Divisional Mini-series 3-0.  The Strait Pirates outshot the Jr. Eagles 32-24.  Port Hawkesbury  will now play the verocious 21-0-1 Antigonish Jr. Bulldogs in one of two Sid Rowe Best-of-Seven Divisional Semi-Finals.  Games 1 and 2 will be in Antigonish Friday March 11 and Sunday March 13.  Game time for Friday is 7:30 and for Sunday 7:00 p.m.
 
 
Membertou Jr. Miners  9    Cumberland County Blues  4
 
The Jr. Miners Josh MacKay scored three times and added an assist, his first goal coming only 40 seconds after the opening face-off to lead the Jr. Miners to their 9-4 win and a 2-0 Lead in their Best-of-Five Mini Series.  MacKay then made it 2-0 and before the first period was complete, Connor MacIntyre and AJ Ley both scored to give the Jr. Miners a 4-0 lead after twenty minutes.  Drew Baldwin scored the game winner Saturday night to make it 5-0 Jr. Miners.  Will Harrison then put the Blues on the Board with a power-play goal before Brady MacLean and Andrew McCarron scored between the Blues Aidan McBurnie to make it 7-2 after forty minutes.  Daniel MacKenzie showed there was still plenty of hockey in the blues as he scored a pair to bring the blues to within 7-4 before Josh MacKay completed his hat-trick and Blake Cox scored in the final stages of the third to make the final 9-4.
 
Membertou Jr. Miners  7    Cumberland County  6
 
The two teams went right back at it Sunday afternoon in Springhill and this was the hardest fought game of the series as just when the Jr.Miners thought they had some breathing space, the Blues would roar back and begin to make life uncomfortable before the Jr. Miners hung on for their 7-6 win and 3-0 Series win.  The Jr. Miners took a 4-0 lead after twenty minutes on goals from Nathaniel Fuller, Brady MacLean, Drew Baldwin and Liam Burke.  The Blues came out in the second breathing fire as they scored four straight goals including Noah Sutherland on a penalty-shot to tie the game 4-4.  Ezekiel Cormier, Burke Beed and Nate Stone were the other Blues scorers.  With 5:11 left in the second, Blake Cox put the Jr. Miners back in front 5-4.  Coby McCarron and Fuller’s second goal put the Jr. Miners back up 7-4 but the Blues refused to quit and goals by Alex Griffiths and Noah Sutherland’s second of the game with 1:22 remaining in regulation pulled the Blues to with 7-6 but they could not get the equalizer and fell in three straight.   The Jr. Miners will now travel to Pictou Thursday night for the opening game in their Best-of-Seven Rowe Divisional Semi-Final with the Pictou County Scotians at 6:30 in Trenton.  Game 2 will be back in Membertou Saturday night at 7:30 before returning to Pictou Sunday March 13 at 6:30 p.m.

3 opening round series on the brink of being over

Deciding games in Three Best-of-Series could all be tonight (Saturday, March 5/22.)
 
Port Hawkesbury  5    Eskasoni Jr. Eagles  4
 
Gregor Yoell of the Port Hawkesbury Strait Pirates scored the game winner to give his team a 2-0 lead in their Best-of-Five Series going into tonight’s third game at the Dan K. Stevens Memorial Arena in Eskasoni starting at 7:30 p.m.  Yoell’s goal with 1:23 left in regulation was the Pirates 5th of the game and Yoell’s second of the game to give Port Hawkesbury a 5-4 win over the Eskasoni Jr. Eagles and a 2-0 lead in their series.  The win follows The Strait’s 6-4 win in the opener of the series earlier in the week.  The Strait Pirates held period leads of 1-0 before the Eagles tied it at 3-3 at the end of the second.  Other goal scorers for the winners were Cameron Gillis, Blake Hadley and Jayden Muise.  For the Jr. Eagles, Kinnon Williams, Thomas Simon, MacKenzie Erickson and Dante Basque on the power-play all recorded single markers.  Danny Gillis recorded three assist for the winners and the Strait outshot the Jr. Eagles 47-31.  The Dan K. Stevens Memorial Arena should be rocking tonight as the Eagles play in front of a home audience doing their utmost to prevent elimination and force a fourth game in this series Sunday night.  Game time once again in Eskasoni Saturday night is 7:30 p.m.
 
Liverpool   7     Valley Maple Leafs  4
 
Kayden Nickerson scored three times including a power-play marker while adding an assist as the Liverpool Privateers went up 2-0 in their Best-of-Five with the Valley Maple Leafs at the West Hants Community Sportsplex Friday night in Windsor.  The Privateers were not challenged in any great fashion as they took period leads of 3-1 and 6-2 and outshot the Leafs 52-34.  Nolan Greenlaw’s goal was the game winner for Liverpool with 12:32 to play in the second period.  Other Privateer goal scorers were John Shubaly, Dylan Patterson and Riley Hurlburt.  For the Leafs who have now been outscored 15-7 in the opening two playoff games, John Van Luxemborg, Hayden Richardson, Brent Levy and Griffin Radford all contributed single markers.  It is now back to Liverpool and Queens Place Emera Centre for Game 3 in this series with the Maple Leafs hoping that some how, some way, they can force a 4th game back in Windsor on Sunday March 6th.

The Penguins did not waste anytime in jumping out in front of the visiting Elks in Lantz Friday night.  Sean Freeman and Evan McHenry put the Pens ahead 2-0 before Nashon Thomas brought the Elks back to within a goal at the end of the first.  AJ Guildford scored a power-play game-winner for the Pens less than five minutes into the second to make it 3-1.  Marshall Plandowski scored as well in the second and it was 4-1 Pens after forty minutes.  Coady Jollymore brought the Elks back to within a pair in the third but Ethan Wheeler scored the Pens 5th goal to make the final 5-2 East Hants who outshot the Elks 52-35.  It is now about 30 kilometres up Highway 102 where the Elks will hope to avoid elimination against the Pens in a 7:00 p.m. start Saturday evening.

Ley and Andrew McCarron - 4 pt nights

The Liverpool Privateers are going to Windsor Friday night in hopes of taking a 2-0 lead in their Best-of-Five Mini Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League Playoff Series with the Valley Maple Leafs.  At Queens Place Emera Centre in Liverpool Wednesday night, the Privateers jumped in front 4-0 after one period and led 5-2 after forty minutes, with the final score being 8-3 Liverpool.

 
Joe Osborne scored the game winning goal for the Privateers with just under 9 minutes left in the opening period.  Liverpool opened the game’s scoring with 3 goals before the first period was even five minutes old as Nolan Greenlaw with his first of two, Alec Howie’s power-play goal and Daniel Kline’s short-handed goal put the home team up 3-0.  Other Privateer goal scorers were Josh Nicholson and Miguel D’Eon with a pair in the third period and Greenlaw’s 2nd of the game with less than a minute to play.  Ben Fleckenstein, Kyle Slingerland and Ryan MacDonald tallied for the Leafs who were outshot 54-17 by the Privateers.  Griffin Radford chipped in with a pair of assists for the Leafs.  Game time in Windsor Friday is 7:30 p.m.  Elsewhere Wednesday night:
 
Membertou Jr. Miners  10     Cumberland County Blues   1
 
The Jr. Miners thrashed the Blues in their playoff opener with AJ Ley and Andrew McCarron both playing starring roles with 2 goals and 2 assists each.  Coby McCarron and Nathaniel Fuller also both notched pair for Membertou.  Single markers were recorded by Josh MacKay and Brandon Grant who actually recorded the game winner just 2:16 into the game.  The Jr. Miners held period leads of 1-0 and 8-1.  Blake Cox recorded 3 assists for the Jr. Miners while Will Harrison’s power-play goal was the only one of the night for Cumberland who were outshot 47-19 by the Jr. Miners.  Cumberland will now travel back to Springhill in hopes of being able to turn their game around as they prepare to host the Jr. Miners Saturday and Sunday.

Bruen Fisher, Evan McHenry and Marshall Plandowski all scored a goal and each added a pair of assists to pace the Penguins to a 7-0 shut-out win over the Elks in Lantz Wednesday evening.  The teams were scoreless after one period but Fisher, Ethan Wheeler and Brody Fraser all scored in the second period to put the Pens up 3-0 after forty minutes.  In the third period, McHenry, Riley MacDonnel, Nico Kane and Plandowski with a short-handed marker scored to make the final 7-0.  The Pens outshot the Elks 32-28.  Game 2 in this Best-of-Five Mini Series is slated for East Hants Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
