Strait now 5-0-0, Blazers win 7th

In what is shaping up to be a classic home and home weekend series, the Liverpool Privateers and Port Hawkesbury Strait Pirates played game one  at the Civic Centre Friday Nov 5 in Port Hawkesbury.  The Strait Pirates squeaked out a 4-3 overtime win with Lewis Taylor scoring his third of the game for the Strait with 3:31 left in the five-minute sudden-death while Blake Chase was serving a two-minute minor penalty for Boarding which he received with 3:51 left in overtime.  The Privateers who clearly controlled a large portion of the game outshooting the Strait 68-37 but they somehow could not contain Taylor.  The Privateers led 1-0 after 40 minutes before Taylor struck for his first two goals before the third period was two minutes old, the goals coming 17 seconds apart.  Daniel Kline tied it for Liverpool.  Gregor Yoell the put the Pirates up 3-2 with 6:36 to play but Daniel Kline with his second of the period for Liverpool scored on the power-play with 4:23 left in regulation.  Alec Howie had given the Privateers their 1-0 lead with his first period goal.  Matthew Spinella turned away 65 of 68 shots in the Strait nets.  The two teams will be back in Liverpool for a 7:00 p.m. start Saturday evening.  For the Strait, they are now 5-0-0 while Liverpool fell to 4-3-1.

 
 
Sackville  4   East Hants  1
 
Brock MacNeil did all the scoring for the first place Blazers in the opening period as the Blazers won their 7th in ten games while the East Hants Penguins fell a game under .500 to 4-5-0.  Sackville went up 4-0 after forty minutes on goals from Jack Walsh and Noah Healy.  Max Turner scored the lone Penguins goal in the third period.  Degen Noble added a pair of assists for the Blazers.

Leafs and Jr. Eagles both record 2nd wins

he Valley Maple Leafs in playing to date, perhaps their best game of the season downed the Pictou County Scotians 6-4 at the West Hants Sports Complex in Windsor Friday evening Nov 6.  The Leafs received a huge game from relative newcomer Carson Gallant who in only his 3rd game with the Leafs this season scored twice and added 2 assists for the Leafs.  One of Gallant’s goals was the game winner with 12:41 to play in the third period.  Brady MacLean also scored twice for the Leafs while adding an assist.  Jake Hunt and Hayden Richardson tallied the other Leaf goals.  Pictou led 1-0 after one period and the Leafs took a 3-2 lead going into the third.  The Scotians Jack Graham playing in nets for the visitors did not have one of his better games as Pictou outshot the Leafs 50-39 with Aidan Durnford coming up strong with a number of key saves for the Leafs.  The Leafs have had their third period struggles this season but that was not a problem Friday evening.  Scoring for the Scotians were Blake Kontuk with a pair while Thomas Kennally and Nathan Peters tallied singles.  The Leafs are now 2-5-0 and the Scotians 3-3-0 heading into their  two games at home this weekend against the 2-4-1 Cumberland County Blues.

 
Eskasoni  6   Capstone Colts 3
 
At the CFB Halifax arena in Shearwater Friday night, the Eskasoni Jr. Eagles doubled up the Capstone Colts 6-3.  The Colts dominated in shots outshooting the Jr. Eagles 44-25 with Andre LeClair playing exceptionally solid between the pipes for Eskasoni.  Curtis Novak scored twice and added an assist for the Jr. Eagles while MacQueen Kendall, Omar Gould, Adam Willison and Nick Burke with the game winning goal were the other Eskasoni goal scorers.  For the Colts who jumped in front 2-0, Patrick Oxner scored a short-handed goal while Cooper Puma and Ryan Welsh scored the other two Colt goals.  Eskasoni is now 2-7-0 while the Colts fell to 3–3-0.

Huge number of critical games this weekend

A number of very significant games in store this weekend in the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League.  The undefeated Port Hawkesbury Strait Pirates take their 4-0-0 record into a home and home series with the 4-3-0 Liverpool Privateers.  The first game will be played in the Strait at the Civic Centre Friday evening before the teams hit the road for the conclusion of their home Saturday night in Liverpool.  The Strait Pirates are the top defensive team in the league to date this season having only allowed 7 goals against in the 4 games they have played.

 
The Sackville Blazers will attempt to take over the overall points lead when they travel to Antigonish Sunday evening.  It will be a clash iff the league’s two top teams with the best records as the AA Munro Jr. Bulldogs are 7-0-0 for 14 points while the Blazers are 6-2-1 for 13 points.
 
The Cumberland County Blues coming off a 4-0 whitewashing by the Pictou County Scotians Oct 29 in Springhill will travel to Trenton for a pair of games this weekend.  The Scotians and Blues will play at 12:40 p.m. Saturday afternoon and again Sunday evening at 6:00 p.m.  A hectic weekend for the Scotians as they will also play the Valley Maple Leafs in Windsor Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
 
The struggling 1-7-0 Eskasoni Jr. Eagles will be looking for their 2nd and potentially third wins of the season as they visit the capstone Colts at CFB Shearwater Friday night before travelling to Brookfield Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.  The Elks will be looking for their 1st win of the season.
 
The other key game this weekend takes place in Lantz Friday evening when the 6-2-1 Sackville Blazers visit the East Hants Penguins.  The Pens would very much like to pull within 3 points fo the Blazers for first place before Sackville goes to Antigonish Sunday night.

Sackville records 6th win, Membertou wins 5th in a row

The Sackville Blazers had little difficulty in winning their 6th game of the season in Windsor Oct 29 as they dealt the Leafs their fifth loss in six games.

The Blazers struck quick and were leading the Leafs 3-1 by the time the second period was five minutes old but the Leafs found some momentum and tied the game 3-3 entering the third period.  However, as has been the case all season, the Leafs struggled in the third allowing the Blazers three unanswered goals including the game winner from Zephron Hachey only 2:29 into the third.  Brian Grandy concluded the game’s scoring with an empty net goal with 1:04 remaining in regulation.  Other Blazer goals were scored by Brock McNeil who had a pair, Degen Noble and Jack Walsh.  For the Leafs, Andrew McCarron, Jake Hunt and Brady MacLean all scored with 2 of them being power-play goals.  The Blazers outshot the Leafs 62-32 and now stand 6-2-1 on the season for 13 points, one point behind Antigonish for the overall League points lead.  The Valley stands at 1-5-0 after six games.
 
Membertou  5    Eskasoni  2 
 
The Membertou Jr. Miners met arch-rival the Eskasoni Jr. Eagles in Membertou Sat Oct 30 and won their 5th consecutive game after losing their opening two of the season to now stand at 5-2-0.  AJ Lloy scored a pair of goals for the Jr. Miners and added an assist while single goals went to Ashton Paul, Nathaniel Fuller and Alex MacKinnon who also recorded 3 assists.  For the Eagles who tied the game 1:40 into the 3rd period at 2-2, Thomas Simon scored both goals.  Despite the 5 goals, the Jr Miners were still outshot by the Jr. Eagles 43-26 and Jr. Miners goalie Spencer Shebib was kept busy throughout the game.  The Jr, Eagles have been involved in some close games to date but can’t seem to buy a break as they saw their record fall to 1-7-0.
 
Pictou County  4  Cumberland County  0
 
The Cumberland County Blues were dealt a 4-0 shut-out loss by the Pictou County Scotians in Springhill Friday, Oct 29 but still remain a point up on the Scotians for the fourth and final playoff berth in the Sid Rowe Division.  The win for the Scotians puts them at 2-2-0 while the loss for the Blues drops them 2-4-1.  Connor Aucoin scored a pair of goals for the Scotians including the third of the game with 38 seconds left in the second period while also collecting an assist. Matt Carson recorded the game winner only 37 seconds into the opening period for the Scotians.  Thomas Kennally scored the lone goal of the third period for Pictou who were also helped out with a 3 assist performance from Matt Chediac.  Pictou outshot Cumberland 38-36.

Strait 4-0-0, Pens now 4-4-0

The East Hants Penguins finished Halloween weekend with a win and a loss and as a result maintained their .500 record in Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League Play with 4 wins and 4 losses at the one-quarter mark of the 2021-22 season.  First let’s take a look at their high scoring affair against the Capstone Colts Friday Oct 29:

Tyler Puma scored two of his three goals for the Colts in the opening period and as a result the Colts never looked back, taking 4-1 and 6-2 period leads.  Cooper Puma and Stephen Warwick on the power-play added the other Colt goals in the fist while Logan Colter scored the first of his three on the night for the Penguins.  In the second, Evan McHenry scored for East Hants to close the gap to a pair of goals but that lasted only 10 seconds before Brayden Hooper-Richard made it 5-2 Colts and Cole Good scored the game winner mid-way through the middle period.  Colter then scored his 2nd and third goals on the evening in the third period that were sandwiched between a Colts marker from Patrick Oxner.  With 6:35 to play, Evan McHenry brought the Penguins back to within a pair before Hooper-Richard scored his second of the night to make the final 8-5 Colts.  Besides his pair of goals, Tyler Puma added two assists while Cole Good also garnered a pair of assists.  Evan Meagher chipped in with 3 assists for the Penguins.  The Colts held a 46-42 advantage in shots.

The Elks received superlative goaltending from Aston Cutten as he stopped 41 of 44 shots in a 3-2 loss to the Penguins which brought their record back to .500 at 4-4-0.  Riley MacDonell scored twice and added an assist for the Penguins while Nick Veinot scored the other Pens goal.  Aiden Fisher and Sam Roers tallied for the Elks who are playing teams relatively close this season but are still seeking their first win, standing 0-5-1 after six games.
 
Port Hawkesbury  5   Brookfield  0
 
The Elks dropped their fourth game of the season while the Strait Pirates won their fourth consecutive game to go 4-0-0 on the season in blanking the Elks.  Aston Cutten had another busy night in nets turning away 42 of 47 shots while the Elks managed 25 at the other end.  Matthew Ellis scored a pair of goals for the Strait with single markers going to Matthew Raike, Gregor Yoell and Lewis Taylor.  Next action for the Strait will be a huge home and home with the 4-3-0 Liverpool Privateers, Friday Nov 5 at the Civic Centre in Port Hawkesbury and then back to the Queens Place Emera Centre in Liverpool Saturday night.

Blazers win 5th of the season

Two long-time arch rivals met in Sackville Monday night with the Blazers clobbering the Valley Maple Leafs 7-1 in the opener of a home and home series which resumes in Windsor Friday night Oct 29 at 7:30 p.m.  The 5-2-1 Blazers were coming off a stunning 2-1 loss to the Cumberland County Blues in overtime Friday night Oct 22 in Springhill.

 
Monday night, the Blazers held period leads of 2-0 and 3-0 while firing 67 shots at the Leafs net.  Zephron Hachey, Daniel Surrette, Alex Charest, Noah Healy, Stephen Purdy, Mitchell Comeau and Jack Meek all scored single markers for the Blazers while Justin Banks tallied a third period goal for the Leafs after they fell behind the Blazers 4-0.  The Leafs are now 1-4-0 on the season .
