NSJHL Division Changes

The Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League is proud to announce the renaming of its two divisions in honour of two individuals whose passion, dedication, and lifelong commitment to the game of hockey left an immeasurable impact on our league and communities. Effective immediately, the former Fred Fox Division will become the Dave Hunter Division, while the former Sid Rowe Division will become the Greg Mayich Division.

This change serves as a lasting tribute to two remarkable ambassadors of the game whose contributions extended far beyond the rink. Both Dave and Greg devoted countless hours to supporting players, building strong organizations, and fostering a love for hockey that will continue to inspire future generations throughout the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League.

Dave Hunter Division

Dave Hunter passed away in March 2026 following a hard fought battle with cancer. Anyone who knew Dave understood the depth of his passion for hockey and his extraordinary knowledge of the game. His influence on the hockey community, particularly in Windsor and throughout Nova Scotia, leaves behind a legacy that will endure for generations.

Dave made significant contributions through numerous leadership roles, including serving as President of the Windsor Hockey Heritage Society, where he helped establish the annual Long Pond Classic Tournament, and as General Manager of the Windsor Schooners during their 1984-85 championship season. Over a span 11 years, he dedicated his time and expertise to the Valley Maple Leafs organizations.

In 2016, while serving as General Manager of the Valley Maple Leafs, Dave proudly supported the team in capturing the Don Johnson Memorial Cup Championship, a milestone he cherished and commemorated by proudly wearing his championship ring. Most recently, he served with tremendous pride as Director of Hockey Operations for the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League.

Dave’s commitment to preserving hockey history, mentoring others, and strengthening the game at every level made him an invaluable member of the Nova Scotia hockey community. The naming of the Dave Hunter Division stands as a fitting tribute to a man whose passion and dedication helped shape the league into what it is today.

Greg Mayich Division

Greg Mayich passed away in June 2024 following a courageous battle with cancer. Greg’s passion for hockey was evident in every aspect of his life, particularly through his 18 years of service with the Membertou Junior Miners as Director of Hockey Operations and as a dedicated member of the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League Board of Governors.

Known to many as the enthusiastic voice behind the microphone, Greg’s play-by-play commentary brought energy and excitement to every game he called. However, his greatest impact was felt through the relationships he built with players, coaches, staff, and community members. Greg made a sincere effort to remain connected with both current and former players, always taking the time to check in and celebrate their successes both on and off the ice. His unwavering commitment to the Junior Miners organization embodied the sentiment he proudly lived by: “Once a Junior Miner, Always a Junior Miner.”

The naming of the Greg Mayich Division ensures that his passion, spirit, and dedication to the game will forever remain a part of the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League.

Through these divisional names, the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League proudly honours the enduring legacies of Dave Hunter and Greg Mayich. Their impact on the game, their communities, and the countless lives they touched will never be forgotten, and their names will forever remain woven into the fabric of our league.
