Membertou splits 2 weekend games, Liverpool now 2-2
The Membertou Jr. Miners coming off a 4-0 opening game loss against Liverpool to begin their 21-22 Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League Season at home a week ago didn’t have any more luck as they rolled into Lantz Friday, Oct 8 for their second game of the season. East Hants struck early and often and by the end of the first period with only 5 seconds remaining, Ethan Wheeler of the Pens scored on the power-play and the goal also proved to be the game winner as East Hants won 6-2. Robbie Dowell scored a pair for the Penguins, his first being the only goal of the second period. Other first period goals for East Hants went to Noah Parent and Riley MacDonell. Nathaniel Fuller scored the only Jr. Miners goal in the first.
In the third period, Bailey MacDonald scored 42 seconds into the final frame to bring the Jr. Miners back to within a pair but Dowell’s second goal and another by Gavin McCready gave the Pens their win and improved their early season record to 2-0-0. Dowell also added an assist to gove him three points on the night. Grant Sanford was the winning goaltender for the Penguins stopping 25 of 27 shots.
Membertou then travelled to Liverpool Saturday night and as we all know hockey is a strange game as the Jr. Miners came out flying scoring four first period goals, forgetting all about their opening two losses and defeating the Privateers 5-0. The Jr. Miners goal scorers were Ashton Paul, Blake Cox, Nathaniel Fuller who also added a pair of assists, Sam MacKinnon and Camdon Langlois who scored short-handed. Spencer Shebib recorded the shut-out for the Jr. Miners stopping all 30 shots he faced. After two games in a week, the Jr. Miners and Liverpool will not play each other again unless it is in the Nova Scotia Championship Final in April.
The Privateers as a result of their 3-1 setback to the Capstone Colts in Shearwater Friday night are now 2-2-0 on the season. The teams were scoreless after one period before the Colts struck for a pair in the second from Brayden Hooper-Richard and Stephen Warwick’s power-play goal which also proved to be the game winner as Blake Chasse scored the only Privateers goal in the third period. The final Colts goal came from Tyler Puma into an empty-net with one second left in regulation.
