2 great games in Springhill - Blues and Eagles split
he Eskasoni Jr. Eagles made their annual trip into Cumberland County Friday and Saturday and while no one really knew what to expect from the Blues under new ownership this season, the Jr. Eagles left with 2 points and Cumberland with 3 after the squads split a pair of 5-4 decisions including the opener Saturday in overtime.
Friday — Eskasoni 5 Cumberland 4 (overtime)
In the opener Friday night, the Jr. Eagles Ethan MacInnis scored on the power-play only 57 seconds into the opening period to put the Eagles up 1-0. Zack Gould tied the game at 1-1 before the opening period concluded. Jaden Martin put the Eagles back in front 2-1 early in the second before the Blues Alex Griffiths connected on the power-play with 8:13 remaining in the middle period. Eskasoni’s Daymon Johnson only 59 seconds later gave the Jr. Eagles a 3-2 lead going into the final period. Dante Basque put the Jr. Eagles up 4-2 with 7:37 left in regulation. Basque also collected a pair of assists on the afternoon. With under 4 minutes to play, the roof settled somewhat on the Eagles as the Blues Burke Beed and Zack Chatfield netted markers 34 seconds apart to tie the game at 4-4. It took only 19 seconds of overtime for Jacob Denny to score the game winner for the Jr. Eagles and give them a 5-4 win. The Eagles outshot the Blues 31-21.
Saturday — Cumberland 5 Eskasoni 4
This game was somewhat different as Cumberland County blew the barn doors wide open with an explosive four-goal second period and held off a late rally by the Jr. Eagles for a 5-4 victory. Jayden Matheson opened the game’s scoring for Cumberland before Jaden Martin scored short-handed for the Eagles with 6 seconds left in the first to knot the game at 1-1. It was all Blues in the second period as Jayden Matheson scored his second of the afternoon 1:32 into the middle period for the Blues followed by Mats Stone goal 40 seconds later to make it 3-1. MacKenzie Richard then made it 4-1 Blues before Burke Beed connected for the game winner on the power-play with only 2 seconds left in the second period. Eskasoni attempted a comeback and did manage to score 3 times in the third with Antle Denny scoring on the power-play and Jacob Denny meeting a pair with under 3:25 but the Jr. Eagles could not score the equalizer and the Blues skated away with the win. The Blues outshot the Eagles 34-25.
