Leafs garner 1st of season - Elks lose their first of two on the weekend
The Valley Maple Leafs have yet to play a road game in the early part of the 21-22 NSJHL season and after what happened in their two home games to date, the Leafs were looking for a far stronger performance from themselves. They had already lost to East Hants and Antigonish by scores of 6-3, but came up with a much better performance Friday Oct 15 against the visiting Brookfield Elks who they defeated 6-4. Ryan MacLellan gave the Valley a 1-0 lead after twenty minutes. The Elks then encountered some penalty difficulties in the second which resulted in a penalty shot goal by John Van Luxembourg only 49 seconds into the second and then a power-play goal by the Leafs Brady MacLean before the second period was five minutes old. That put the Leafs up 3-0 before Jacob Bolger put the Elks on the scoreboard. Ethan Salsman and Andrew McCarron then put the Leafs up 5-1 before Ryan Burton of the Elks made it 5-2 going into the third period. Griffin Radford just 1:01 into the third made it 6-2 Leafs before the Elks finished with a pair of goals from Luke MacDonald and Sam Rogers to make the final 6-4. The Elks did outshoot the Leafs 43-39. The Leafs will be back home to play the Membertou Jr. Miners Friday Oct 22 at 7:30 before playing their first road game of 21-22 in Sackville Mon Oct 25.
