Pictou loses first of year
It has been quite a revival for the Brookfield Elks so far in this 22-23 NSJHL Season and Saturday afternoon at home, they kept everyone believing in their revival as yet in another one goal game, the Elks sidelined the Sackville Blazers 5-4 to complete the 1/4 mark of their season with a 5-3-0 record. Brookfield has been involved in six one-goal games of the eight they have played, winning five and losing 1. The Elks started strong on a pair of first period goals from Cale McLellan and Ethan Price with the first of his two on the afternoon. Price made it 3-0, 49 seconds into the second period before Zachary Jenkins finally got the Blazers on the scoreboard with 8:53 to play in the middle period. Brookfield’s Sam Rogers then put the Elks back up by 3 only 37 seconds later before Brock McNeil concluded the second period scoring, netting one for the Blazers and giving the Elks a 4-2 lead going into the third. Owen Lancastert then made it 5-2 Brookfield before Duggan Gauthier and Kyle Lohnes brought the Blazers back to within one at 5-4 but that was all Sackville could do and the Blazers now 3-5-1 on the season lost it 5-4. Pablo De Larrinaga and Bryson Uberoi were steady in nets all afternoon as both goalies faced 46 shots with De Larrinaga saving one more than Uberoi to earn the win. Ben Fraser connected for 3 assists for the Elks.Membertou 6 Pictou Scotians 5Landon Clark’s goal with 2:48 left in regulation gave the Jr. Miners a 6-5 win over the Pictou County Scotians and in the process handing the Scotians their first loss of the season. Nathaniel Fuller gave the Jr. Miners a 2-0 lead after one period with a pair of goals before Luke Young and Ryan Frizzle tied it for the Scotians mid-way through the second. The Jr. Miners took a 3-2 lead into the dressing room after two on goal from Alex MacKinnon with 2:26 remaining in the middle frame. The Scotians then jumped in front 4-3 in a see-saw battle on goals from Thomas Kennaley only 26 seconds into the third and a short-handed goal from Ryan Frizzle, his second of the night before the third period was five minutes old. The Scotians couldn’t hang on as the Jr. Miners replied with goals from Blake Cox and Nathaniel MacMillan 1:22 apart to take a5-4 lead. Matt Carson then tied it for the Scotians before Clark’s game winner. Pictou outshot the Jr. Miners 40-30.Liverpool 5 Valley Maple Leafs 2The Privateers snapped a 3-game losing streak to improve to 5-3 while the Valley Maple Leafs can’t win no matter how hard they try at the present time as they lost 5-2 and fell to 0-9-0. Sharpshooter Alec Howie opened and closed the game’s scoring for Liverpool while also collecting an assist. The Leafs actually led 2-1 for 18:54 of the game as Kayden Kuryluk tied it at 1-1 late in the first and Terran Baillie on the power-play gave the Leafs a 2-1 lead 1:01 into the second. It stayed that way until Carson Gallant’s power-play goal with 4:05 left in the second. Daniel LeBlanc scored the game winner with 2:38 remaining in the second. Daniel Kline wo also garnered an assist made it 4-2 in the third before Howie’s goal sealed the 5-2 win. Dylan Patterson added a pair of assists for the Privateers. Liverpool has now reached the 1/4 mark of their season at 5-3-0 and remain 2 points back of the Capstone Colts and East Hants Penguins for first place in the Fred Fox Division.
