Pens lead in Power-Play Goals

Special Teams is a definition in sports - In Hockey it is group of players most often used during power plays consisting of more defensive players than usual on the team that was penalized in hopes of killing the penalty, or more offensive players than usual on the team with the advantage in players to increase the chance of scoring a goal.

While the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League simply does not have the statistical depth to keep percentages on the number of penalties called during a season versus the power play and short-handed goals scored.  The number of power and short-handed goals are still recorded and with two teams already having passed the half-way mark in their schedule (Maple Leafs and Blues), 2 more having reached the half-way mark of their schedule (Privateers and Blazers), 2 more teams whose next game will put them eat the half-way mark of their schedule (Membertou and Capstone) and six other teams having played between 11 and 13 with plenty more to follow one the next to weekends before the Christmas Break before the season opens full bore in early January for a chance to play for the Don Johnson Memorial Cup symbolic of Atlantic Junior Hockey Supremacy in Liverpool in late April.

With the next schedule of games slate for Friday evening across the province, the following shows you exactly how teams are doing on the power-play and what they can do at times playing short-handed.  The following is a list of the teams in order with Most Power Play Goals and Most Short-handed goals.  When you look at the standings, some teams will surprise you as to where they rank in these two respective categories compared to their win-loss record.
