Two OT thrillers in Membertou and Cumberland
The snow disappeared allowing for play to resume in the NSJHL Saturday night and there were two thrilling OT Games with both Membertou and Port Hawkesbury suffering excruciating defeats. First off in Membertou:
Eskasoni 7 Jr. Miners 6 (OT)
It was a wild night in Membertou as Nathaniel Fuller with a pair of goals and Dante Basque with the Jr. Eagles scoring in the first to give the Jr. Miners a 2-1 lead after twenty minutes. Large claps of thunder seemed like they were being heard, in essence it was only the fast-paced and exhilirating hockey being demonstarted by the two clubs as Eskasoni scored four straight goals in the second including a pair by J.C. MacDonald and Kinnon Williams only 9 seconds apart to the Eagles up 3-2 before Kendall MacQueen and Dante Basque made it 5-2 Eskasoni with all 4 goals coming in the opening 6:11 of the middle period. The Jr. Eagles held onto their 3 goal lead for 3:16 before the Jr. Miners rifled home three goals from Andrew McCarron, Alec Campbell and Blake Cox to knot the game 5-5 after forty minutes. Trey Sturge made it 6-5 Eskasoni mid-way through the third before Cox scored the second of his two goals on the power-play with 31 seconds left in regulation to send the game into a five-minute sudden death overtime. With 1:56 gone in overtime, Arlen Denny scored ti give the Jr. Eagles their 16th win in 20 games this season. Membertou outshot the Jr. Eagles 43-37.
Cumberland 6 Port Hawkesbury 5 (OT)
The Strait Pirates were making a two-game visit to Cumberland County over the weekend and while securing at least a point in their opening game, will no doubt look back on this one if they should miss the playoffs by a point or two as the Strait Pirates held period leads of 2-1 and 4-2 and stretched their lead to 5-2 over the Blues, before Cumberland County rallied for four consecutive - the fourth one coming 1:40 into overtime by Zackery Gould to give the Blues their second win of the season 6-5. Noah Sutherland, Daniel MacKenzie scored 21 seconds apart in the third to pull the Blues to within a single marker before Cody McKay with his second of the game tied the contest at 5-5. Aiden Fisher scored the other goal for the Blues. For the Strait, Matthew Raike, Cadyn Power, Keir Jordan, Jason Johnson and Matthew Ellis tallied for the Strait who outshot the Blues 51-38.
Capstone 5 Sackville 2
The Colts held period leads of 1-0 and 2-1 before erupting for three in a row in the third period to get by the Blazers. Cody Garcin who also collected two assists for the Colts, Hunter Canning, Cole Good and Trayner McCulloch with a pair did the damage for the Colts who outshot the Blazers 30-27 while Duggan Gauthier Zachary Jenkins scored for the Blazers. Riley Henman registered 3 assists for the Colts who are now 16-2-1 on the season for 33 points and first place in the Fred Fox Division.
East Hants 6 Brookfield 1
The Elks continue to have trouble scoring goals of late managing only three in their past five games. They only scored one Saturday afternoon at home in a 6-1 loss to the East Hants Penguins. Sean Freeman netted a hat-trick for the Pens with a goal in each period while Noah Comeau, Marshall Plandowski and Brody Fraser tallied singles. Sam Rogers connected for the Elks who were outshot 50-34. The Elks are now 9-10-2 for 20 points, 2 back of the Privateers and Blazers but fortunately for them they do hold 4 games in hand on the Blazers.
