Antigonish hammers Eskasoni

All three games played in the NSJHL Sunday involved the Sid Rowe Division.  At the Dan K. Steevens Memorial Arena in Eskasoni, the Antigonish Jr. Bulldogs hammered the Eskasoni Jr. Eagles 7-1 for their third win in five games over the Jr. Eagles this season.  They would have now completed their 6 game regular season between the two clubs but Friday night's game in Antigonish now had to be made up due to the snowstorm and poor travelling conditions.

The Jr. Bulldogs have now won three of the five games played between the clubs this season outscoring the Eagles 25-12 in the five contests.  The Bulldogs latest vicory came after they opened up 3-0 and 5-1 leads after the first and second periods and they never looked back.  Bradley Armstrong scored once and added two assists while Will Mierau scored once and added 3 assists to pace the Bulldogs to their 6 goal margin of victory.  Other Bulldog goal scorers were Will Fitzsimmons, Sam Grant, Brodie MacDonald and Zachary Lorette.  Antigonish outshot the Jr. Eagles 41-22.  It leaves both teams tied for first place in the Rowe Division with the Bulldogs owning a 16-3-1 record for 33 points and the Jr. Eagles who are at 16-4-1 for 33 points.  They are both nine points ahead of third place Port Hakwkesbury.

 

Pictou  6    Membertou  5   (OT)

 

It was another excruciating defeat for the Membertou Jr. Miners after having lost 7-6 to Eskasoni in OT at home Saturday.  The Jr. Miners are only 2 points out of a playoff berth as they trail Pictou by a pair of points for fourth place.  The biggest problem for the Jr. Miners is that the Scotians have so many make-up games compared to Membertou and as a result hold 7 games in hand on Membertou.  In Sunday night's game, the Jr. Miners jumped out to a 3-0 lead after twenty minutes on goals from Blake Cox and Nathaniel Fuller only 27 seconds part before the game was a minute old.   Andrew McCarron made it 3-0 Jr. Miners before the period ended.  The Scotians began the second period breathing fire scoring four consecutive goals from Jack Tompkins and Ryan Frizzzle only 4 seconds apart before Cale MacLaughlin and the Tompkins with his second of the game put the Scotians ahead 4-3.  Landon Clark's goal with slightly more than five minutes to play in the middle frame tied the contest at 4-4.  Jarrett Hicks put the Jr. Miners back in front 5-4 with 6:06 to play in regulation before the Scotians Blaise MacDonald tied it for Pictou with only 36 seconds left in regulation.  It only took 34 seconds of overtime when Zach Houston fed Hayden Burgess for the game winner, it was Houston's 2nd assist of the night to give the Scotians their 10th win of the season in 18 games.  Pictou is now 10-7-1 for 21 points while Membertou is 8-14-3 for 19 points.

 

Port Hawkesbury  6   Cumberland  0

 

The Strait Pirates after losing in overtime to the Blues Saturday outshot Cumberland 48-31 en route to a 6-0 whitewashing of Cumberland in Springhill Sunday afternoon.  Matthew Ellis scored a pair of goals and added an assist while Brady MacNeil, Owen Stockdale, Matthew Raike and Zach Binotto tallied single markers for the Strait.  Jason Johnson and Drew MacDonald bith collected a pair of assists for the Strait.  Keegan Greencorn making only his 3rd start of the season recorded the shut-out for the Strait who are now 3-0-1 against the Blues in the four games they have played to date this season while outsscoring the Blues 28-10.  The Blues are 1-3-0 against the Strait.  They will conclude their 6 game regular season the enxt two Fridays with Port Hawkesbury back in Cumberland Friday, Jan 27 and Cumberland in Port Hawkesbury Friday, February 3.
