Membertou completes regular season

Brookfield picks up a vastly needed win to stay in playoff contention…….Membertou plays their final regular season game and the Colts knock-out East Hants while Pictou doubles up Port Hawkesbury.  The following is a rundown on Nova Scotia Junior Play Saturday:

To the Membertou Jr. Miners, it will feel like sitting on a bed of scalding hot nails over the next 8 days as they watch to see what help they might be given and whether they will be in the 2022-2023 NSJHL Playoffs.  The Jr. Miners completed their regular season in Springhill Saturday afternoon with an easy 11-2 romp over the Cumberland County Blues.  The Jr. Miners finished the season 12-14-4 for 28 points which leaves them tied with the Port Hawkesbury Strait Pirates with 28 points.  However the Strait still has three games remaining and the Pictou County Scotians who are two back of both clubs still have five games to play.  The Jr. Miners held period leads of 3-0 and 9-2 on Saturday saw Nathaniel Fuller score twice and collected three assists, Blake Cox connected for a hat-trick for his 25th, 26th and 27th goals of the season to go along with 18 assists for 45 points and presently tied for third place in the League scoring race.  Andrew McCarron scored once and collected 3 helpers while Brady Doucette collected 3 assists.  Other goal scorers for the Jr. Miners were Drew Baldwin, Landon Clark, Alex Mackinnon, Tye Clarke and Connor MacIntyre.  Burke Beed and Aiden Fisher registered second period goals for the Blues who were outshot 60-30.  The Blues are now 2-24-1 entering the final week of the regular season.

The Scotians stayed two points behind both the Jr. Miners and Strait after they tripled the Pirates 6-3 in Trenton.  The Strait might have fared a little better but were burned by penalties as the Scotians connected for three power-play goals including a pair in the first from Luke Young and Jayden Hatchers.  Thomas Kennally scored two goals on the afternoon, his first to round out the scoring in the opening frame and his second, the third power-play marker for the Scotians to give Pictou a 4-0 lead.  The Strait’s Dave Matthews then put on a scoring show scoring three times for the Pirates in the second with Ryan Frizzle connecting for the Scotians to give them a 5-3 lead after two.  Jack Tompkins rounded out the scoring for the Scotians in the third while also collecting two assists in the game.  Luke Young besides his goal also collected three assists.  The Scotians outshot the Strait 31-26.

The Elks won an absolutely huge game in Liverpool 4-2 over the Privateers as they picked up two gigantic points in their quest for a playoff berth.  The Elks outshot the Privateers 49-29 but trailed 1-0 after twenty minutes after Dylan Patterson connected for the Privateers.  The Elks did not let that deter them as Luke Jansen-Faught and Sam MacNeil scored to give the Elks a 2-1 lead after forty minutes.  Noah Latimer connected for the game winner for the Elks 3:02 into the third.  Carson Gallant came back to pull Liverpool to within 3-2 before the Elks Sam Rogers put one into an empty net with one second remaining in regulation to give the Elks their huge win.
 
Capstone  Colts   5    East Hants   1
 
These two clubs have been locked in a duel all season for first place in the Fred Fox Division and the Colts came out with a 5-1 win.  The Colts jumped in front 4-0 on goals from Colin Goodwin, Cole Good, Cody Garcin and Tyler Puma before Noah Comeau ruined Alec MacVicar’s chance at another shut-out.  Joe Brown finished the scoring of the Colts who were headed for another big game against Sackville Monday night.
