Scotians lose nail biter

With exactly one week to play in the 22-23 NSJHL Regular Season, the playoff Races are getting more intriguing every time a game is played.  The following is a look at action from Sunday’s games.

Two fierce rivals concluded their regular season schedule and depending on what happens this week, a Best-of-Seven Quarter Final in the opening round of the playoffs is certainly not out of the question.  Antigonish finished with a 5-0-1 record in the six games between the two clubs while the Scotians were 1-4-1 with two games being decided in extra time.  The Bulldogs outscored the Scotians 19-9 in the six games.  The latest win for the Bulldogs came Sunday at the Trenton Minor Community Sportsplex as they edged by the Scotians 2-1.  Luke Baldwin connected for a goal and an assist for Antigonish while Nathan Peters sent the Scotians into the third period with the game tied at 1-1 with his goal with only 1:36 to play in the middle period.  Jacob Cook nailed the game winner for the Bulldogs with slightly more than  six minutes left in regulation.  Antigonish has clinched first place with their impressive 24-3-1 record while the Scotians who have fur games to play this week are still fighting for their playoff lives with a 12-11-2 record.

The last time these two clubs met saw the Pirates play a splendid game in defeating the Jr. Eagles 2-1.  While Sunday’s game meant nothing in the standings for the Jr. Eagles, they didn’t pay that way as they outshot the Strait 42-32.  Sonny Kabatay notched his 36th goal of the season and to go along with a pair of assists giving him 43, he now has 79 points in the regular season.  His nearest competitor is teammate Marcellus Francis who scored twice and added an assist giving him 26 goals and 32 assists for 58 points on the season.  In Sunday’s game Kabatay opened the game’s scoring before Jason Johnson tied it for the 13-12-2 Pirates to conclude the first.  Cadyn Power put the Strait up 2-1 with 7:04 to play in the second.  Francis with his first of the game and Dante Basque with the game winner put the Eagles in front 3-2 after forty minutes.  The only goal in the third was Francis’s empty-netter.  The Jr. Eagles outshot the Pirates 42-32.
 
East Hants   7    Valley Maple Leafs   3
 
The East Hants Penguins refuse to let first place in the Fox Division out of their sights.  They humbled the Maple Leafs 7-3 in Windsor Sunday night and moved within two points of the Capstone Colts for first in the Fred Fox Division.  They were up 4-0 before the Leafs Ryder Tolson scored with 1:42 left in the second period.  Morgan Lake who finished with three goals on the evening as well as an assist finished the game’s scoring with 5:56 to play in the game.  Lake gave the Pens a 1-0 lead after twenty minutes and his second goal came with 4:09 having elapsed in the third period.  Devin Meagher scored a pair for the Pens including the game winner with 2:02 remaining in the first.  Logan Colter and Ryan Langlois were the other Pen goal scorers.  Ethan Wheeler contributed 3 assists for the Pens. East Hants was all over the Maple Leafs outshooting them 81-31 but give Eric Bilodeau credit in the Leafs net as he turned away 74 of the 81 shots he faced.  Ben McCarthy was the other Leaf goal scorer.
