Antigonish up 2-0
Three playoff games took place Sunday, March 5/23 in the NSJHL. Only one series shows a team with a 2-0 lead and they are the Antigonish AA Munro Jr. Bulldogs. The following is a recap of play Sunday:
Antigonish 6 Port Hawkesbury 3
The Jr. Bulldogs and Strait Pirates traded 33 shots on goal apiece but the Bulldogs found the back of the net twice the amount of time than the Strait did. Dave Matthews did give the Pirates an early 1-0 lead but Zachary Lorette and Kyler Lohnes came back for the Jr. Bulldogs before Will Fitzsimmons scored the first of his two in the game for a 3-1 Antigonish lead. Owen Stockdale then brought the Strait back to within a single marker before Fitzsimmons scored his second of the game to give the Bulldogs a 4-2 lead entering the third period. Logan McGrath’s short-handed goal made it 5-2 in the third. Jason Johnson scored the Strait’s third and final goal of the game and Sam Grant finished Antigonish’s scoring with an empty net marker. The Bulldogs will look to go up 3-0 in the series when Game 3 goes Wednesday night in Antigonish at 7:30 p.m.
Pictou 4 Eskasoni 3
The Scotians evened their series at 1-1 with the Jr. Eagles in Trenton. Five of the game’s seven goals were scored on the power-play. Sam Mackinnon gave the Jr. Eagles a 1-0 lead after twenty minutes and the teams totalled five goals in the second period with Camden Burgess, Luke Young and Jack Tompkins scoring for the Scotians and Marcellus Francis tallying a pair for the Jr. Eagles. The game’s winning goal was scored 18 seconds into the third period by the Scotians Nate Supryka. The Eagles outshot Pictou 43-42.
East Hants 7 Liverpool 3
The Penguins won by four goals in Liverpool Sunday after the Privateers won by four Friday in Lantz in a series which based on the season series looked like all games would be fought tooth and nail to the bitter end. It hasn’t been the case so far as the Penguins took 3-0 and 6-1 period leads. Brody Fraser and Devin Meagher scored a pair of goals each for the Penguins while singles were added by Marshall Plandowski, Logan Colter and Joey Merriam. Alec Howie scored twice for the Privateers and Joe Osborne once as the series now shifts back to East Hants for an 8:15 start Tuesday evening.
