Blues win 2nd straight against Jr. Eagles

A pair of one-goal games and a two goal game resulted in the conclusion of Saturday’s play in the 23-24 Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League Season.  After dropping a 5-1 game in East Hants Friday, the Membertou Jr. Miners bounced back strongly in Bridgewater Saturday night to defeat the South Shore Lumberjacks 4-3 and in the process outshot the Jacks 34-22.  Jarrett Hicks and Riley Hanrahan scored the in the first period for the Jr. Miners while Alec Howie scored for the Jacks to give Membertou a 2-1 lead after the first.  In the second, John Shubaly tied it for the South Shore before Jarrett Hicks scored his second and third goals of the evening to give the Jr. Miners a 4-2 lead after forty minutes.  The only goal in the third period was Alec Howie’s second of the game but it was as close the South Shore would get in losing 4-3.  Brennan Coleman added a pair of assists for the the losers..

The Strait Pirates overcame a 1-0 deficit after the first period to finally defeat the Elks 3-2 on a third period goal from Cadyn Power.  Ben Stewart scored for the Elks in the first and added an assist on Aiden Gloade’s 2nd period goal while Rory Wood and Matthew Ellis scored for the Strait Pirates to tie the game at 2 after forty minutes. Issaac Sparrow turned away 36 f 38 shots for the Pirates while Ben Radford stopped 31 of 34 coming his way in the Elks net.

    The Cumberland County Blues won their second straight over the weekend against the Eskasoni Jr. Eagles with a 4-2 win at home in Springhill.  The Blues staked themselves to 1-0 and 2-1 leads after the opening two periods and won it on a pair of goals from Jayden Matheson and Callum MccLellan in third period.  Darrell MacKenzie scored both of the Blues first two goals and Sonny Katabay likewise for the Jr. Eagles.  Cumberland now 2-2-0 on the season outshot Eskasoni 53-41.
