Meagher overtime goal wins it for Pens

It was a will see-saw affair in Sackville Monday night before Devin Meagher scored 2:38 into Sudden-Death overtime for the East Hants Penguins to give them a 6-5 win over the Sackville Blazers in Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League Play.  East Hants was up 1-0 after the opening period on the first of two goals by Ryan Langlois.  Langlois scored his second of the game to make it 2-0 in the early stages of period two.

With the Pens up 2-0, Sackville exploded for the next five goals in the second off the sticks of Stephen Purdy who recorded 2 if the five goals while singles were registered by Will Meek, Zachary Jenkins, and Justin Hardie.

However this was not the end of the chaotic action as the Penguins roared back to tie the game at 5-5 with three goals in the third from Owen Cleary, Nick Veinot, and Ethan MacVicar to knot the game at 5 and send it to sudden-death Overtime where Devin Meagher accomplished his magic.

Marcus Pettipas stopped 37 0f 42 shots in the Pens net while Ben Etsell was responsible for 42 of 48 stopped shots in the Sackville net.

The Penguins are now 6-1-0 for 12 point and the six wins include two overtime while Sackville is 2-2-2 for 6 points.

Even more interesting as the season approaches the 1/4 mark in games played is that when you look at the League’s Scoring Statistics,  the Top 9 point getters are all from East Hants or Sackville.  Degen Noble of the Pens and Stephen Purdy who recorded his 4th and fifth goals of the season Monday night are tied for the top with 12 points.  After that we have a 7-way tie for second with 11 points.

Some huge action this weekend as the Penguins travel to Port Hawkesbury for 7:30 start.  Pictou County will be in Shearwater to play the Capstone Colts while the League’s two last place teams in their respective divisions clash in Windsor as the Eskasoni Jr. Eagles travel to play the Valley Maple Leafs.  One other game Friday will see Sackville travel to Springhill for a game with the Cumberland Blues who are off to a 2-3-0 start.
