Bulldogs receive a scare in Brookfield

The Brookfield Elks might be 10 points out of a playoff position at the present time but one good thing is they have three games in hand on the fourth place Sackville Blazers in the chase for the fourth and final playoff seeding in the Fred Fox Division.  Even better the Elks and Blazers meet Monday Dec 4th in Sackville at 7:30 p.m.

 
In Brookfield Saturday afternoon, the Elks almost pulled off a gigantic upset as after falling behind 4-0 to the now 19-1-1 Antigonish AA Munro Jr. Bulldogs, the Elks came back with three consecutive goals before finally losing 4-3.  Owen Forsythe gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead after twenty minutes before Nick Marshall, Daniel Chiasson and Will Normandeau put the Bulldogs up 4-0 in the second.  The Elks began their comeback with a short-handed goal by Will Stewart with only 2:43 to play in the middle period.  Ben Fraser who assisted on Stewart’s goal for Brookfield scored two goals in the third, the first with only 51 seconds having elapsed and the second with just under nine minutes remaining in regulation.  The Elks simply could not come up with the tying goal.  The Bulldogs outshot the Elks 43=36 and swept the season series 2-0 while outscoring the Elks 10-3 in their two games.
 
Membertou   6      Pictou County Scotians   5   (Overtime)
 
The Pictou County Scotians after a hard-fought win in Windsor over the Valley Maple Leafs Friday night travelled to Membertou Saturday night and lost a nail-biter 6-5 in overtime.  The Leafs appealed Friday night’s game contending the Scotians were still using an illegal player and that appeal has yet to be ruled upon.  The Scotians also found out their appeal over the use of illegal players was dismissed and as a result unless they decide to proceed further in the appeal process now occupy 5th and last place in the Sid Rowe Division with a record of 7-15-1, one point back of the Eskasoni Jr. Eagles.
 
As for Saturday night’s game in Membertou, the Scotians fought back to tie the game 3-3 after falling behind 3-0.  Coby McCarron opened the scoring for the Jr. Miners with a short-handed goal followed by power-play goals from Tyson LeFrense and Tyler Cormier to give the home team a 3-0 lead with 7:52 to play in the opening period.  The Scotians then struck for a pair of goals before the first period concluded with Nate Supryka scoring the first of his two power-play goals and Matt Carson connecting.  Supryka then scored his second of the game and fifth in two games to tie the game at 3-3 entering the third period. Blake Snow put the Jr. Miners back in front 4-3 in the third only to see Matt Carson score his second of the night for the Scotians 37 seconds later to toe the game at 4-4.  Jack Tompkins who also had two assists put the Scotians up 5-4 on a power-play effort, only to see Trey Sturge respond nine seconds later to knot there game again, this time at 5-5.  The teams only needed 24 seconds in the sudden-death overtime period to see Tyson LeFrense score his second of the game and provide the Jr. Miners with their 12th win of the season and move them one point ahead of the Strait into second place in the Rowe Division.  Membertou held a 43-36 shots advantage.

It was a rough game for the Jr. Eagles in Bridgewater as the Lumberjacks despite winning only 5-4 in Eskasoni, annihilated the Jr. Eagles 10-0 Saturday evening moving the Lumberjacks 2 points ahead of the Sackville Blazers and into third place in the Fox Division.  Cohen Westlake was the offensive catalyst for the Lumberjacks scoring three times and adding a pair of assists while Daniel LeBlanc scored twice and added a couple of other assists.  Daniel Kline also scored a pair while adding two assists with single markers being registered by Brennan Coleman who had three helpers for four points, Alec Howie with two helpers as well and Owen Osborne.  Aaron Lane collected four assists for the Lumberjacks.  South Shore outshot the Jr. Eagles 55-24 and now have a record of 12-4-1 for 25 points.
