Six games slated for NSJHL this weekend
After a nearly three week Holiday break, the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League swings back into gear with a full slate of weekend games Friday Jan 5, Saturday Jan 6th and Sunday Jan 7th.
With the regular-season wrapping up the last week of February, games become extra critical for all teams chasing playoff spots in the 32 game regular season.
Friday night in Port Hawkesbury, the Membertou Jr. Miners holding three games in hand on the Port Hawkesbury Strait Pirates visit the Pirates in a 7:30 start. Both teams are tied for second in the Sid Rowe Division with the Jr. Miners holding a record of 12-7-0 and the Strait Pirates 12-10-0 giving each team 24 points. These two clubs have yet to play each other this season and Friday night’s game will be the first of four between the two over the next two months. The second game of the season between these two clubs will go Saturday January 27 at Membertou.
At C.F.B. Shearwater Friday evening, the Brookfield Elks will be play one of two weekend games in which they will need all players playing hockey like they never have before as they fight for their playoff lives. The Elks carry a 6-10-1 mark into Shearwater to play the second place 15-4-1 Capstone Colts in a 7:30 start. The Colts presently trail the 1st place East Hants Penguins by four points with a game in hand. The Elks are in fifth place in the Fred Fox Division, ten points back of fourth place Sackville with the Elks holding two games in hand on the Blazers. The Elks also are only one point ahead of the last place Valley Maple Leafs.
Saturday January 6th:
The Elks will play host to the 12-4-1 South Shore Lumberjacks Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. at the Don Henderson Memorial Sportsplex.
The Jr. Miners will return home Saturday evening for a 7:30 start against arch-rival Eskasoni. The 8-12-0 Jr. Eagles presently trail the Pictou County Scotians by a single point in the race for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Sid Rowe Division.
Sunday January 7th:
The 8-15-1 Scotians with only eight games remaining on their schedule will play host to the Strait Pirates Sunday evening at 6:00 p.m. in Trenton. Eskasoni will also host the powerful 20-1-1 Antigonish Jr. Bulldogs at home Sunday afternoon.
