Electrifying game in Sackville

n an outstanding, electrifying Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League game in Sackville Monday evening, the South Shore Lumberjacks squeezed out a 4-3 win over the Sackville Blazers.  Sackville played 6 on 4 against the Lumberjacks for the final 1:35 of regulation but could not come up with the tying goal.   The Lumberjacks held period leads of 2-1 and 3-2 before the Blazers tied it at 3, 2:57 into the third period.  Liam Sylvester netted the game winner for the Lumberjacks with 9:56 to play in regulation.  The Lumberjacks outshot the Blazers 55-40 but even with the win South Shore goalie Keegan Greencorn played superbly in garnering the win.

The game began when Sackville’s Justin Hardie missed an excellent opportunity all alone in front of Greencorn but saw the puck just skip over his stick.  Alec Howie put the Lumberjacks up 1-0 on a soft to medium wrist shot from just inside the Blazers blue line that eluded Blazers goalie Connor Blackwood.  Joe Osborne made it 2-0 South Shore as he slid an easy shot past Blackwood as Osborne was left unprotected to the side of the Blazers net.  The Blazers looked good in the opening five minutes of play but the Lumberjacks then took over and played exceptionally well despite allowing Sackville to move to within a goal as Justin Hardie made a sensational pass to Degen Noble who connected low to the right-hand side of Greencorn.   Stephen Purdy of the Blazers attempted to tie it for Sackville before the 1st period concluded as he went in alone but Greencorn went down and played Purdy well forcing him to the left-hand side without eventually getting a shot away.  South Shore outshot Sackville 20-14 in the opening frame.

Just 2:27 into the middle frame, Blackwood gave up a bad rebound after Aaron Lane’s shot from the point and Aiden Fisher pounced on      the loose puck and put it into an empty net to make it 3-1 Lumberjacks.  Give credit to the Blazers who were struggling to this point but a bang-bang play in front of Greencorn saw Degen Noble score his second goal of the game for Sackville.  It seemed to inspire the Blazers as they began applying more pressure on the Lumberjacks despite Blackwood having to make 3 critical saves.  The third save coming after Joe Osborne swept around the net and let a difficult wrist shot go but Blackwood saved it to his left-hand side.  The teams entered the dressing room after forty minutes with South Shore leading 3-2 and outshooting the Blazers 20-10 for a two period advantage of 40-24.

In the third period, the Blazers came out strong and just 2:57 into the final period of regulation Luke Maillet took a pass and with a quick wrist shot to the right side of Greencorn, the score was knotted at 3-3.  It stayed that way until Sylvester’s game winner as he went in 3 on 2 with Alec Howie and Brennan Coleman and put it between the pipes to score the eventual game winner.  Prior to the game winner, the Blazers Will Meek missed a great chance as he came down Greencorn’s left-side but just couldn’t connect.  After the go-ahead goal, the Blazers came right back and were buzzing all around the South Shore net with no success and with Cam Bewsher dining a shot off the cross-bar in an attempt to tie the game at 4-4.  With the man advantage for the final two minutes, Blackwood was pulled with 1:35 left giving a Sackville a 6 on 4 advantage and despite enormous pressure all around the Blazers net, they could not beat Greencorn who stood tall and the Lumberjacks won it 4-3.  Sackville outshot South Shore 16-15 in the final period for a 55-40 game advantage.  The win enable the Lumberjacks to pull within four points of the second place Capstone Colts in the Fred Fox Division as they won their 14th game in 19 starts this season.  South Shore will keep their busy schedule up with a pair of games this weekend as they play Friday evening in Lantz against the 1st place East Hants Penguins and then at home Saturday evening against the Valley Maple Leafs.
