The issue of special teams was discussed earlier in December in an article on this website and centered around team leaders as well as teams with the most power-play goals and most short-handed goals. What was not explored was the reasoning behind special teams which are required of course because of penalty minutes. No matter what level of Junior Hockey one discusses, the issue of a chip on a player’s shoulder always surfaces In earlier years, bench clearing brawls were relatively common in Nova Scotia Junior Hockey and fights were even more predominant until the CAHA adopted a rule which the NSJHL voted to accept which was one fight includes a game misconduct. Fighting has gone down substantially since that time. In fact a fighting major in the final ten minutes of any game now also means the player/players are suspended for the following game.
In saying all of this, penalty minutes accumulated by teams in a given season often show the discipline instilled in players and how teams despite the penalty minutes are often good at killing off penalties while others struggle severely. The following in a numbered sequence are the penalty minutes compiled by individual teams up to and including games of Monday January 8/24.
