Three Spectacular Hockey Games Saturday

Matt Carson stole the show in Membertou Saturday evening as the Pictou County Scotians and Membertou Jr. Miners wrapped up their 4 game regular season series.  Carson scored with 36 seconds left in regulation and again with 2:55 remaining in overtime as the Scotians defeated the Jr. Miners for the third time in four games between the teams this season.

The Scotians were trying to catch the train for nearly the entire game.  Carson’s goal finally enabled the Scotians to say they had caught up before finally moving ahead with his overtime winner. In the season series the Scotians won 3-2 and 4-3 in overtime while winning another in regulation 3-2.  The Jr. Miners won 6-5 in overtime in another game.  Pictou finished the season series 3-0-1 against the Jr. Miners while Membertou was 1-1-2.  Pictou outscored the Jr. Miners in their four games 15-13.

As for the remainder of the game Saturday, Tye Clark and Adam Hicks put the Jr. Miners up 2-0 after the first period before Thomas Kennaley for the Scotians on the power-play while Tye Clarke was serving a roughing penalty and Nathaniel Fuller a Cross-Checking Minor for the Jr. Miners, penalties they received 10 seconds apart.  However Alex MacKinnon scored with 1:20 left in the second and made it 3-1 Jr. Miners after forty minutes.  In the third, Cal Marner scored another power-play goal for the Scotians before Carson’s two goals won it for Pictou.  Jack Tompkins recorded a pair of assists for the Scotians including one on the overtime winner. The two goals for Carson were his 13th and 14th of the season.  Elsewhere Saturday:

South Shore   5     Sackville   4   (0vertime)

The Lumberjacks were coming off an 8-1 trouncing of the Blazers in Sackville Jan 15 but the Blazers did not allow it to impact them as they grabbed a 2-0 lead  early in the second after the teams played to a scoreless draw in the opening period.  Degen Noble and Ryan MacIntyre with power-play goals had the Blazers in front 2-0 before Joe Osborne and Cohen Westlake replied for the Lumberjacks to knot the game at 2.  Both Lumberjack goals came on the power-play as well.  25 seconds after Westlake tied it at 2-2 for the South Shore, Bailey Conrad put the Blazers back in front 3-2.  The second period ended after Daniel Kline scored his 14th of the season to tie the game at 3-3 entering the third.  The blazers once again took the lead on a goal from Cameron Bewsher mid-way through the third but with 2:40 showing on the clock, Camden Pellerine scored for the Lumberjacks to tie the game at 4-4 and send it to a five-minute sudden death overtime.  With 21 seconds remaining in overtime, Brennan Coleman knotted his 13th goal of the season to give the Lumberjacks their 17th win in 22 games this season.  Both goalies played very steady as Ben Etsell stopped 35 of 40 shots he faced in the Blazers net while Keegan Greencorn stopped 32 of 36 shots in the Lumberjack nets.

Capstone Colts   3       Brookfield Elks   2

The Elks were coming off a 2-1 loss to the Colts in Shearwater last week and were hoping for a better result in front of their home fans Saturday afternoon.  Jordan Matheson’s power-play goal for the Elks started the game in the right direction for the Elks before Liam Andrews of the Colts scored twice to  give the Colts a 2-1 lead after the first.  Since being trade from the Elks to the Colts, Ben Fraser scored his third goal in a Colts uniform and gave Capstone a 3-1 lead before Jack Tarshis pulled the Elks back to within a goal at 3-2 but the Elks could do no more damage and the Colts won 3-2.  Connor Brace stopped 29 of 31 shots in the Colts net while Thomas Gariepy allowed no goals in the Elks net in the third period after taking over from Anthony Viscardis who had played the first two periods.
