Lumberjacks stunned at home

The South Shore Lumberjacks suffered a critical loss at home in Bridgewater Thursday evening to the non-playoff bound Valley Maple Leafs by a score of 3-2.  The loss prevented the Lumberjacks fro  moving to with two points of first place in the Fred Fox Division.  The Maple Leafs meanwhile climbed out of last place in the Fox by moving two points ahead of the Brookfield Elks.  The Maple Leafs grabbed a 2-0 lead after the opening period ass Jacob Gerhardt scored less than three minutes into the opening period while Reese Smith tallied with less than four minutes to play.  Zach Evans of the Lumberjacks scored the game’s only goal in the second period.  The Leafs Braden Aucoin scored the game winner for the Leafs mid-way through the final period.  Aaron Lane brought the Lumberjacks back to within a goal in the latter stages of the third but superb goaltending by the Leafs Jackson Murphy prevented the South Shore from tying the game at 3-3.  Murphy stopped 46 of 48 shots.  The Leafs meanwhile scored three times on only 22 shots on the South Shore net.  Owen McDermid recorded a pair of assists for the Leafs.  The Lumberjacks remain tied with the East Hants Penguins at 20-6-1 for 41 points and second place in the Fox Division.  The Capstone Colts are in sole position of first with a record of 22-5-1 for 45 points and will be looking to gain another 2 points Friday night at home as they host the Sackville Blazers at C.F.B. Shearwater at 7:30 p.m.  The Penguins meanwhile host the Leafs at 7:30 in Lantz.  The Pictou County Scotians will play in the League’s fourth game of the evening as the travel to Antigonish for 7:30 start with the Antigonish Jr. Bulldogs.

 
In the second make-up game of the evening, the Membertou Jr. Miners took over sole position of second place in the Sid Rowe Division by outscoring the Eskasoni Jr. Eagles 8-5 in Eskasoni.  Landon Clark scored three times in a span of 6:03 in the third period for the Jr. Miners to pace the winning club.  Trey Sturge recorded four assists for the Jr. Miners.  Eskasoni outshot Memebrtou 53-43 as Darian McInnes stopped 48 of 53 shots in the Jr. Miners net.  Other Jr. Miner goal scorers were Nathaniel Fuller, Tye Clarke, Tyson LeFrense, Coby McCarron and Alexander Chenhall.  Kyle Rudderham scored a pair for the Jr. Eagles while single markers went to Riley Crane, Keagan Geizer, and Noah MacKinnon.  The Jr. Miners are now 16-8-1 for 33 points while the Strait is 15-11-1 for 31 points with both teams squaring off in Port Hawkesbury Friday night at 7:30 p.m.  For the Jr. Eagles, it was their 21st loss in 29 games this season.
