Supryka 5 point night
Two games on tap Sunday evening in the NSJHL. Nate Supryka all but wrapped up the League Scoring title with a huge effort in Trenton while the defending Atlantic Champion Antigonish Jr. Bulldogs wrapped up somewhat of an unusual weekend. The following is a recap from Sunday night:
Pictou 6 Eskasoni 4
Nate Supryka scored three goals including an empty netter with 20 seconds to play while also adding a pair of assists as the Scotians topped Eskasoni 6-4. Supryka with his effort has now opened up an eight point lead in the scoring race as the league finishes the regular season Monday Feb 26. He now has 20 goals and 24 assists for 44 points. Curtis Novak gave the Jr. Eagles a 1-0 lead after twenty minutes. The Scotians exploded for five second period goals including a pair from both Supryka and Thomas Kennaley with Jayden Hatchard adding a single marker. Kegan Geizer scored the lone Eagles goal. In the third, Jacob Wolodka and Terrance Toney brought the visitors to within a single goal before Supryka put one into an empty net. The Scotians now have one game left in the regular season which they will play Tuesday night in Port Hawkesbury at 7:30 p.m. Their record is 14-16-1 but will play the Jr. Bulldogs in the opening round of the playoffs as they are unable to climb out of fourth.
Port Hawkesbury 3 Antigonish 2
The Jr. Bulldogs lost their second game in three starts over the weekend as the Strait Pirates moved ahead of Membertou and into 2nd place in the Sid Rowe Division with their 17th win of the season for 35 points compared to the Jr. Miners 33 with the Jr. Miners holding a pair of games in hand and a busy week ahead. The teams were tied 1-1 after two periods Sunday night after Luke Gould’s first period goal for the Strait and Sam Grant’s marker for the Jr. Bulldogs in the second. Landon MacIntosh made it 2-1 Pirates in the third before Bradley Armstrong tied it once again at 2-2 for Antigonish. Cadyn Power’s game winer for the Strait with 4:33 left in regulation gave the Strait their 3-2 win. The Strait is now 17-11-1 while Antigonish is 25-3-2.
There are a pair of games on the holiday Monday with the South Shore Lumberjacks travelling to Membertou for a make-up game with the Jr. Miners. This was a game postponed the first weekend of the season back in mid-September. The first place Capstone Colts will travel to Sackville for a 7:30 start against the Blazers. Strictly hypothetical at this point but a Lumberjacks win Monday and a Colts loss would move South Shore within 2 points of the Colts in the chase for first in the Fox Division. A win by the Jr. Miners however would move them back into a tie with Port Hawkesbury for 2nd place in the Rowe in the fight as to who will secure home ice advantage between the two teams in the opening round of the playoffs. The game for South Shore marks the first of a three game road in three days this week as after Monday, they play in Brookfield Tuesday night and East Hants Wednesday night.
