Jr. Miners-Strait conclude their regular season
The Membertou Jr. Miners and Port Hawkesbury Strait Pirates completed their 2023-24 Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League Regular Season with the Jr. Miners doubling up the Strait Pirates 6-3 at home Monday evening. Both clubs were involved in a real struggle for second place through much of the season until the Jr. Miners won 7 of their last 9 games while the Strait went 4-4-0 over their past eight games. The win Monday evening for Membertou was their 21st of the season against 10 losses and 1 overtime loss. The Strait meanwhile had to settle for third place in the Sid Rowe Division at 17-14-1 for 35 points.
It only took 22 seconds into the opening period for Marcus Larade to give the Strait a 1-0 lead Monday but Drew Baldwin’s first of two goals on the power-play tied it for the Jr. Miners. Danny Gillis came right for the Strait with a power-play goal but their 2-1 advantage lasted only 22 seconds as Coby McCarron sent the teams to their dressing rooms tied at 2-2 with his marker for Membertou.
In the second, Baldwin with his second and Tyson LeFrense’s power-play goal gave the Jr. Miners a 4-2 lead entering the third. Nathaniel Fuller made it 5-2 Membertou before Blake MacDonnell tallied for the Strait. It was all Port Hawkesbury could navigate as Landon Clark put one into an empty net for the Jr. Miners to make the final 6-3. The Strait did outshoot the Jr. Miners 36-32 but lost the season series as they went 1-2-1 against their first round playoff opponent while the Jr. Miners were 3-1-0 against the Strait. The Jr. Miners outscored the Strait 22-15 in the four games. On the season Membertou scored 112 times while allowing 101 goals while the Strait scored 100 goals even and allowed 106.
