Howie notches game winner in third
For the first time in nearly a quarter-of-a-century, a team has roared back to win four straight in the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League Playoffs after falling behind 3-0.
The last team to do it was the 2000-2001 Windsor Royals when they did it in the Provincial Championship series against Port Hawkesbury. The latest are the South Shore Lumberjacks who had a huge crowd at the Lunenburg County Community Lifestyle Centre absolutely rocking Tuesday night when they scored three third period goals to defeat the East Hants Penguins 3-1 and capture the Fred Fox Divisional Best-of-Seven Semi-Final 4-3. The Pens were leading 1-0 on an early first period goal from Morgan Lake and it stayed that way until there was 10:15 to play in regulation when Ethan MacVicar tied the game at 1-1 for the Lumberjacks. It took the Lumberjacks only 1:27 to go ahead 2-1 when Alec Howie scored the eventual game winner. Howie scored his second goal of the game into an empty net with 15 seconds remaining. The game had an unfortunate ending after only four minor penalties had been called the entire game, a dust-up obviously from sheer frustration took place at the buzzer which saw officials hand out 44 minutes in penalties including game misconducts to Jack Taylor and Morgan Lake for the Penguins. Two fighting majors were also assessed to the Penguins. Of the game’s 58 penalty minutes, Taylor served 25 of those minutes.
The South Shore outshot the Penguins 35-25 as Keegan Greencorn who had played a brilliant game in Game 6 in Lantz Monday night was very steady again Tuesday.
The Fox Division Final is expected to begin this weekend when the Lumberjacks go to Shearwater to play the Capstone Colts Friday night before returning home Saturday evening. However this has yet to be finalized. The series schedule is expected to be released sometime on Wednesday.
