Jr. Miners win in Overtime!

The Port Hawkesbury Strait Pirates continue to keep teams guessing as to what kind of team they will be facing on any particular night.  After being outscored by the Antigonish Jr. Bulldogs 14-2 in two recent games and garnering less than 25 shots on goal total in the two games, the Pirates bounced back strongly in Membertou Saturday night.  Granted the Strait did lose but they took the Jr. Miners to overtime and it took a goal from Tyler Cormier only 1:11 into sudden-death Saturday night to give the Jr. Miners a 3-2 win.

The Strait Pirates did get off to a great start as Rory Wood scored twice and put Port Hawkesbury up 2-0 in the opening 9:09 of the first period.  Unfortunately, despite taking 31 shots on Miners Goalie Lucas Fraser, it was all the scoring they would do as the Jr. Miners improved to 2-2-0 on the season and the Pirates fell to 1-3-1. Ty Oliver brought the Miners to within a goal as he scored with 1:31 left in the opening period.  Charlie Joe Francis then scored in the second for Membertou to tie the contest at 2-2.  It was the final goal until Cormier’s overtime marker.  Manny Strong bounced back with a strong game in nets for the Pirates turning away 38 of41 shots in a losing effort.

Elsewhere Saturday:

In Bridgewater, the South Shore Lumberjacks allowed the East Hants Penguins to score 6 unanswered goals as they tripled up the Lumberjacks 6-2.  The Lumberjacks led after one period 1-0 on Liam Sylvester’s goal but it was all the scoring the South Shore could do until Aaron Lane tallied his club’s second goal with 8:25 left.  In between the Penguins scored six times including five in the second period.  Logan Durno scored twice while singles went to Nick Veinot, Alex Field, and Jayson Hanson.  Ethan Hines finished the Pens scoring early in the third.  Fintan Boudreau was back in nets for the Pens and he stopped 31 of the 33 shots he faced.  Keegan Greencorn had an off-night for the Lumberjacks stopping 22 of 27 shots before being taken out after forty minutes.  He was replaced by Zach MacInnes who stopped 6 of 7 shots for the South Shore in the final period.

Three games on tap Sunday as the Sackville Blazers travel to Eskasoni, the Brookfield Elks play in Antigonish and the Pictou County Scotians host the Membertou Jr. Miner.
