NSJHL Staff | 2024-10-02

The Pictou County Scotians are off to a blazing start in the NSJHL, proving they are ready to make a serious challenge for the coveted Sid Rowe Championship. Sitting just one point behind the Antigonish Bulldogs, the defending three-time league champions, the Scotians have positioned themselves as legitimate contenders, thanks to a mix of veteran leadership, new firepower, and a never-quit mentality.

Strong Start in the Standings

With a 3-0-1 record, the Scotians are one point behind the Bulldogs with one game in hand. Their special teams have played a crucial role in their early success, particularly their power play, which is converting at an impressive 31%. Offensively, they’ve netted 16 goals, while keeping their opponents to 11, a testament to their solid defensive structure and goaltending.

Additions Making an Impact

The Scotians have bolstered their lineup with the key return of 2023-24 scoring champion Nate Supryka and the signing of Jr A standout Lane Lochead. Their offensive contributions have added much-needed depth to a roster already packed with talent. Goaltending has also been a bright spot, with Eli James taking on the role of the clear number one for his first full season in the NSJHL, while overager Brandon Connors adds a veteran presence as a reliable backup.

The Rivalry with Antigonish Bulldogs

The Scotians’ biggest test this season will undoubtedly come from their rivalry with the Bulldogs. These two teams, just 35 minutes apart, have a history of fierce competition, fueled by the fact that many players from both sides attend the same university—STFX. This year, they are slated to meet eight times in the regular season, ensuring that tensions will run high and fan anticipation will only grow as the season unfolds.

Pictou County has consistently played Antigonish tough, and this season looks no different. The Bulldogs, a well-oiled machine with championship experience, are still the team to beat, but Pictou is determined to make every game a battle.

Veteran Leadership and Locker Room Presence

The Scotians are leaning heavily on their overagers, including Matthew Carson, Cale MacLaughlin, and goaltender Brandon Connors. These veterans bring not only experience but also leadership, helping the younger players navigate the ups and downs of a long season. Connors, in particular, has been a key figure in the locker room, adding confidence and stability.

Coaching and Strategy

Under head coach Chris Hatchard, the Scotians have embraced a hard-working, gritty style of play, built on teamwork and perseverance. Hatchard has instilled a belief in his players that success comes from playing for each other, and the results have been evident on the ice. The Scotians may not always dominate games on the scoreboard, but their relentless forecheck and physical play make them a difficult team to face on any given night.

Passionate Fan Base

What truly sets this rivalry apart is the passion of the fans. Both communities pack the stands whenever the Scotians and Bulldogs face off, creating an electric atmosphere. With so many matchups between these two teams this season, fan involvement will only intensify, adding fuel to the fire of an already heated rivalry.

A Serious Run at the Sid Rowe Championship

With the season still young, Pictou County is well-positioned to make a deep run at the Sid Rowe Championship. The combination of veteran leadership, emerging talent, and solid goaltending gives them the tools to challenge Antigonish for supremacy. As the season unfolds, expect the Scotians to remain in the mix, setting up what could be an unforgettable playoff run.
