Blazers rally from 2-0 deficit
After being upset by the Port Hawkesbury Strait Pirates Friday evening, the Capstone Colts certainly did not want an 0-2-0 Cape Breton weekend, so they hit the ice in Membertou hungry Saturday night and doubled up the Jr. Miners 6-3. The Sackville Blazers rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the South Shore Lumberjacks 3-2 in Bridgewater while in Brookfield, it was a rough and tumble affair with 177 penalty minutes being dished out in the Elks 6-4 win over the Valley Maple Leafs. The following is a re-cap of Saturday’s action:
Capstone Colts 6 Membertou Jr. Miners 3
The Colts tok a 3-0 lead after forty minutes but was Liam Andrews 1st of two goals on the game that proved to be the game winner with 6:53 to play in regulation. Benjamin Veinot, Nick Xidos and Connor Stewart put the Colts up 3-0 before the Jr. Miners Trey Sturge scored on the power-play to pull Membertou back to within a pair mid-way through the third. This however set off a litany of goals and was followed by Liam Andrews game-winning short-handed goal with 6:53 left in regulation to put the Colts up 4-1. Landon Clarke’s power-play marker then brought the Miners back to within a pair one minute after Andrew’s first goal of the game. However, only 41 seconds after Clarke’s goal, Andrew scored again to put the Colts up 5-2. The teams then trade goals in the final 3:27 as Jacob Trione made it 6-3 Colts before Tyler Seymour tallied for the Jr. Miners. The loss for the Jr. Miners leaves them with a 2-4-0 record and tied with the Strait for 5th place in the Sid Rowe Division. The Strait is 1-3-2. The Colts are 3-2-0 and tied with Sackville for 2nd place in the Fix Division.
Sackville 3 South Shore 2
The Lumberjacks took a 2-0 lead in Bridgewater Saturday evening but could not hang on and allowed the Blazers to score three consecutive goals and escape with a 3-2 win. Kyle MacIntyre scored both Lumberjack goals, one in the first and a short-handed marker in the second to go up 2-0 but with 1:24 to play in the middle frame, Will Meek replied for the Blazers to leave Sackville trailing 2-1 after forty minutes. The Blazers energized during the 2nd period intermission as they scored twice in the third period, Will Meek scored his 2nd of the game and then Lawson Cook on the power-play scored the game winner for the Blazers with only 2:04 left in regulation. Rory Browne took a hooking penalty for the Lumberjacks with 2:18 left and it only took Cook 14 seconds to capitalize on the power-play. The South Shore did outshoot Sackville 38-32.
Brookfield 6 Valley Maple Leafs 4
The Valley Maple Leafs remain the only team without a point in the NSJHL after a 6-4 loss in Brookfield Saturday afternoon. Just like Friday’s home game in Windsor against the East Hants Penguins, the Leafs were never really out of the picture but like Friday when they rallied to tie the Penguins at 6-6 before allowing three consecutive goals, it was similar Saturday in Southern Colchester County. The Teams were tied 1-1 after the opening period on goals from the Elks Will Singer and a short-handed goal by the Leafs Justin Banks.
In the second, only 1:14 having elapsed, Nate Grafstein scored before Aiden MacLeod replied on the power-play for the Leafs three minutes later. However, with 2:33 to play in the second, Jackson Spraggon scored to give the Elks a 3-2 lead after two periods. Will Singer with his second goal of the game made it 4-2 Elks before Jacob Gerhardt scored 38 seconds later for the Leafs and closed their gap to with 4-3, Sam Rogers put the Elks back in front 6-4 before Ben McCarthy brought the Leafs back to within goal at 6-5. Sam Rogers with his 2nd goal of the game with only 35 seconds remaining in regulation gave the Elks their 6-4 win and their second win of the season as they improved to 2-3-0. Both teams amidst the goals played an undisciplined style of hockey as 177 minutes in penalties were called including 8 misconducts with the Maple Leafs taking three on one play.
