Wild Shoot-out in Sackville
No hockey coach even wants to win a game when a total of 13 goals have been scored between two teams but Sackville Blazers Head Coach Dwight Dempster certainly took it Monday evening in Sackville. It was a wild shoot-out at the OK Corral with the Blazers Adam Maillet scoring his second goal of the game with 49 secs left in sudden-death overtime to defeat the Brookfield Elks 7-6.
Maillet also netted a power-play goal with 1:41 to play in the second period to put the Blazers up 4-2. He also also recorded an assist for a three-point night. The two clubs were tied at 2-2 after twenty minutes as Aiden Gloade and Owen Wood short-handed put the Elks up 2-0. Will Meek’s power-play goal and Maillet’s goal evened the score at 2-2. In the second, Xavier Rivard scored just 13 seconds into the middle frame which was followed by an Owen Fitzgerald goal to give Sackville a 4-2 lead. The Elks were farm from finished however as they bounced right back on a goal from Cale McClellan, his first of two on the night, to give the Blazers a 4-3 lead entering the third period. Zach Jenkins then made it 5-3 Blazers in the third but the Elks refused to quit rallying with a pair of goals from Bryson Currie and Willim Stewart to knot the game at 5-5. The Clubs were still not finished as Zach Jenkins made it 6-5 Blazers before McClellan scored his 2nd of the night with 3:18 left in regulation to tie the game again at 6-6. It then took Maillet’s overtime winner to finally put the game away. Rivard recorded a pair of assists for the Blazers and Logan Mitchell picked up 3 assists for the winners.
The win for the Blazers was their 5th of the season in seven games to date and leaves them only two points behind the first place East Hants Penguins who are 6-0-0. The Capstone Colts occupy 3rd place at 3-2-0 for 6 points while the Elks are only one point back of the Colts with a 2-3-1 mark and 5 points. Sackville outshot the Elks 52-47. The Blazers will be back in action in a rare Friday night home game as they face the challenging 3-0-1 Pictou County Scotians in a 7:30 start at the Sackville Arena. The Elks meanwhile travel to East Hants for a 7:30 start.
