Bulldogs suffer 2nd loss of season

The Sackville Blazers came out strong Sunday night in Antigonish after being stunned by the Valley Maple Leafs in Windsor Friday night.  The Maple Leafs lost in Bridgewater and the Strait Pirates moved into a tie with Pictou for second place in the Rowe Division.  All of this Sunday in three Nova Scotia Junior Hockey Games.  The following is a recap.

The Blazers after losing 4-3 in a six round shoot-out to the Leafs in Windsor Friday night, were suffering no lasting impacts from the loss as they headed to Antigonish Sunday for a game with the 11-1-0 Jr. Bulldogs.  Ryan Walsh and Ryland Skerry put the Blazers out in front 2-0 in the first period and it stayed that way through 40 minutes.  In the third, Matt Pluscauskas made it 3-0 before Kellen Fuller replied for the Bulldogs 43 seconds later to bring Antigonish back to within two goals.  However the Bulldogs could not find the net for the remainder of the game and pulled their goalie, only to allow Zachary Jenkins an empty-net goal with 32 seconds left in regulation to make the final 4-1.  Conor Blackwood stopped 39 of 40 shots in the Blazers net while the Blazers had 28 shots on goal.  Lawson Cook and Will Meek both had a pair of assists for the Blazers.

The Lumberjacks evened their record to 5-5-0 after doubling up the Leafs 4-2 in Bridgewater Sunday.  Brennan Coleman who scored twice for the Lumberjacks, both in the first period while Cohen Westlake added another first period marker.  Jacob Gerhardt tied the game at 1-1 for slightly less than 3 minutes in the first.  Brandon Rideout made it 4-1 Lumberjacks on the power-play in the second before Nicholas Vidito also on the power-play scored the Leafs final goal with 1:56 to play.  The Lumberjacks outshot the Leafs 39-26.

All but one of the game’s six goals were scored in the second period.  It was 0-0 after twenty minutes and 4-1 Pirates after two periods as Jesse Gillis, Keir Jordan, Drew MacDonald and Calum Morris all scored for the Strait.  Jacob Wolodka scored the Jr. Eagles goal.  Aidan Stanwick scored the game’s final goal for the Jr. Eagles in the third.  The Jr. Eagles fell to 3-9-0 with the loss while the Pirates are one game shy of the half-way mark in their schedule and now stand at 5-7-2.
