Lumberjacks move back to .500

Two clubs who have been battling through the first-half of the 24-25 Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League season to stay above .500 met in Bridgewater Saturday evening while the East Hants Penguins returned to their winning ways Saturday afternoon in Brookfield after losing their first game of the season Friday night.  The following is a recap of Saturday’s action:

The Jr. Miners were coming off a huge win in Sackville Friday night and the Lumberjacks a 5-3 loss in Windsor against the Valley Maple Leafs.  The Lumberjacks prevailed 6-2 outshooting the Jr. Miners 39-22.  It boosted the Lumberjacks record back to .500 at 7-7-0 while the Jr. Miners fell to 6-8-1.  The two teams exchanged goals 38 seconds apart in the opening period as Rory Browne scored on the power-play for the Lumberjacks before Tyler Seymour came back and tied it at 1-1 before the first period concluded.
 
Adam Hicks then gave the Jr. Miners a 2-1 lead early in the second before the Lumberjacks responded with three consecutive goals from Justin Hardwick Brown, John Shubaly’s power-play goal an another from Angus Berry and the Lumberjacks led 4-2 after forty minutes.  The Lumberjacks finished their win with two unanswered goals in the third from Brennan Coleman and Cohen Westlake on the power-play.  This game saw plenty of combat with 174 minutes in penalties being assessed including 128 of those in the third period.  In total, there were 7 game misconducts, 4 misconducts and four major penalties handed out, one of them for charging.

The Penguins after losing at home to Antigonish Friday evening, won their 15th game of the season by walloping Brookfield 7-1.  Owen Wood gave the Elks an early 1-0 lead in the opening period but it was the only goal they would score as the Pens came back to score seven in a row.  Jacob Sanford who also recorded two assists tied the game at 1-1 for he Pens entering the second period.
 
In a span of less than four minutes, the Penguins went up 4-1 after two periods on goals from Noah Comeau, Connor McNamara and Alex Field. In the third period Devin Meagher scored twice and Jayson Hanson once to make the final 7-1.
