Lumberjacks collect crucial win

The South Shore Lumberjacks certainly don’t believe in making life easier for themselves as they attempt to clinch the fourth and final playoff spot in the Fred Fox Division.  Coming off three consecutive losses, the Lumberjacks hosted the last place 4-16-2 Brookfield Elks Saturday night in Bridgewater.

The Lumberjacks needed another strong game from Keegan Greencorn in nets after falling behind 2-0.  Cale McClellan and Jack Piper’s power-play goal with just over five minutes to play in the first gave the Elks a 2-0 lead but the Lumberjacks put themselves back in it with a pair of goals in the period’s final 1:47 as Daniel Kline scored and then Elijah Rivera’s marker with 4 seconds showing on the clock tied the game at 2-2 after one period.  The Lumberjacks sustained their momentum entering the second period and added a pair of goals from Joe Osborne and Angus Berry in a span of 6:40 in the second half of the middle period to go up 4-2 but the Elks refused to die as Bryson Currie scored for the Elks with under three minutes remaining in the second to send the teams to the dressing room after forty minutes with the South Shore up 4-3 and that is the way the game’s final score ended as the teams did not score in the third.  Keegan Greencorn who played such a strong game in the Lumberjacks loss in Sackville Monday night turned away 35 of 38 shots in earning the win Saturday as the Elks outshot the Lumberjacks 38-25.  Aaron Lane collected a pair of assists for the South Shore in a winning effort while Jackson Spraggon remained red hot with his scoring for the Elks, collecting a pair of assists in the loss.

The big question for the Lumberjacks this week is to see how many games their leading scorer John Shubaly will be suspended after he was assessed a match penalty with 27 seconds to play in the second for attempting to injure or deliberating an injury to an opposing player.
