James records his first shut-out of season
A close one in Trenton and the Colts knock-off the Penguins for the third time this season. Here is a rundown of play Sunday night in the NSJHL.
Pictou County Scotians 1 Membertou Jr. Miners 0
In a hard fought game through 60 minutes, the Pictou County Scotians Matt Carson’s 12th goal of the season 1:54 into the third period was the only goal scored in the game as the Scotians won their 14th game of the season 1-0 over the Membertou Jr. Miners in Trenton Sunday night.
Lane Lochead assisted on the lone Scotians goal to maintain a 1 point lead over Devin Meagher of the East Hants Penguins in the race for the League Scoring Championship. The assist for Lochead was his 25th of the season to go along with 12 goals for 37 points. Eli James recorded the shut-out for the Scotians improving his record to 12–5-0 on the season while maintaining a 2.43 Goals Against Average and a .930 save percentage. Pictou outshot Membertou 46-36.
Capstone Colts 5 East Hants 3
For the third consecutive time in approximately 30 days, the Capstone Colts defeated the East Hants Penguins 5-3 in Lantz and moved to within four points of tying the Penguins for the lead in the Fred Fox Division. The Pens are 19-4-0 for 38 points while the Colts are 17-7-0 for 34 points. The Colts went up 2-0 on goals from Liam Andrews, his 16th of the season and Cody Garcin as the teams approached the mid-way mark of the second period. However Davis Cooper on the power-play and Ryan Langlois scored for the Penguins and the teams were knotted 2-2 after forty minutes.
In the third, Cooper Puma tallied his 9th of the season to go along with 24 assists for 33 points and a tie with Owen Forsythe of the Antigonish Jr. Bulldogs for third place in the League scoring race, to put the Colts up 3-2 and Benjamin Veinot followed up with another power-play goal 30 seconds later to give the Colts a 4-2 lead. However the Pens were not quite finished as Devin Meagher scored his 21st of the season for th Pens to move East Hants to within a goal. However 1.02 later Finn Merritt tallied his 18th of the season for the Colts for a 5-3 lead and that proved to be all the scoring necessary to give the Colts their win. The Colts had a wide-margin in shots as they outshot the Pens 45-27.
Antigonish 7 Eskasoni 4
The Eskasoni Jr. Eagles are only 5-15-2 and 5 points out of the last playoff berth in the Sid Rowe but they certainly made the defending Atlantic Jr. Champion Antigonish Jr. Bulldogs work for everything necessary to earn a 7-4 win over the Jr. Eagles in Eskasoni Sunday evening. Daniel Young’s goal mid-way through the third period brought the Eagles to within a goal of Antigonish at 5-4 but Brody MacPherson’s goal followed by an empty-netter by Will Normandeau gave Antigonish a 7-4 win and their 20th of the season. The majority of the game’s scoring took place in the second period after the Bulldogs Daniel Chiasson had given Antigonish a 1-0 lead after the first. Chiasson also recorded three assists for Antigonish. In the second Venel Campbell wrapped up a seven point weekend as he scored a pair of goals in a span of 14 seconds to give Antigonish a 3-0 lead. The Jr. Eagles then attempted their comeback with a pair goals from Keagen Geizer and Arlen Denny to make the score 3-2 Bulldogs. Tully Grant and Mitchell Gould then traded goals and it was 4-3 Antigonish. Will McKinnon likely scored the back-breaker for the Jr. Eagles as he scored short-handed for Antigonish with only 1:16 to play in the second and give the Bulldogs a 5-3 margin heading into the final period of regulation. Eskasoni was hurt by penalties and were forced to play two-men short-handed for 2:10 in the second period. Antigonish outshot the Jr. Eagles 37-33.
