Two Shoot-out wins recorded Friday
Two games were decided in shoot-outs while the Colts won their 19th game over Sackville. The following is a recap of play Friday night in the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League:
East Hants 4 South Shore 3 (Shoot-Out)
The first seven players in the shoot-out round Friday night in Lantz all failed to score before Noah Comeau tallied on the fourth Penguin attempt to give East Hants a 4-3 win over the South Shore Lumberjacks. Nick Veinot scored the only goal of the first period to provide the Pens with a 1-0 lead. The teams each traded two goals in the second period as Jacob Sanford and Josh Nicholson tallied for the hosts while Daniel Kline and a short-handed effort from Matthew O’Neill for the Lumberjacks saw the visitors enter the third period trailing by a goal once again. Cohen Westlake tied the game at 3-3 for the South Shore with 12:12 to play in the final period of regulation. The Lumberjacks were forced to play the final 1:25 of overtime short-handed with Daniel Kline serving a hooking penalty but the Penguins could not take advantage and settled for the shoot-out winner by Comeau. Nick Veinot finished with a goal and two assists for the Pens. The Penguins now 22-4-0 for 44 points outshot the Lumberjacks 34-30. The South Shore moved into a third place tie with Sackville in garnering their point and are now 12-12-1 for 25 points.
Colts 5 Sackville 3
The Colts jumped in front of Sackville 5-1 with 3:38 having elapsed in the third period only to see Xavier Rivard and Aiden Tucker reply with goals from Sackville. It was as far as the Blazers could come back despite playing the final 53 seconds with an empty net. Nick Morin and Jacob Trioni-Willis both scored a pair of goals for the Colts with Morin registering an assist and Trioni-Willis 2 assists. Finn Merritt’s 20th goal of the season opened the scoring for the Colts on the power-play while Adam Maillet’s second period goal were the only other two goals scored in the game. Xavier Coggins recorded three assists for the Colts wh outshot the Blazers 58-35. The Colts are 19-7-0 for 38 points, six back of the first place Pens.
Antigonish 4 Pictou 3 (Shoot-Out)
The Bulldogs jumped out in front 3-1 on Venel Campbell’s goal 25 seconds into the third period but allowed the Scotians to rally and tie the contest at 3-3 as Camdyn Burgess scored 2:07 after Campbell’s goal to pull the Scotians to within a goal before Jack Sullivan tallied with 1:01 left in regulation on the power-play to knot the game at 3-3 with Cohen Pictou serving a slashing penalty for the Jr. Bulldogs. Antigonish played the final 32 seconds of the five-minute overtime short-handed as Ethan Toolan was serving a hooking minor but the Scotians could not win it. The shoot-out only went the regular three rounds with all players failing to score with the exception of Brody MacPherson who scored on the Bulldogs 2nd opportunity, enough for a 4-3 Antigonish win. The Bulldogs are now 23-3-0 while Pictou has now lost 11 games this season with three of them coming via a shoot-out and the other in overtime to give them a record of 15-7-4 for 34 points. The Bulldogs outshot the Scotians 39-23.
