Three games were played in the Nova Scotia Junior League Saturday and third place in the respective Fox and Rowe Divisions are still up in the air. The following is a recap of play Saturday.
East Hants 4 South Shore 2
The South Shore Lumberjacks played in front of over 1000 fans Saturday night to help the Lumberjacks celebrate Pink in the Rink. The 50/50 kept increasing and rose to a grand total of $3462.00 !! With the winner taking home $1731.00, the Lumberjacks donated their Teams share of $1731.00 to the 15th Annual Gift From the Heart and the Health Services Foundation of the South Shore. This year the funds collected will help purchase a Molli machine to help with early detection of Breast Cancer. The Lumberjacks want to thank their amazing fans who helped make this possible !!
As for the game, The home team Lumberjacks came up with somewhat of a lacklustre effort against the Fox Division East Hants Penguins who clinched the division title with a 4-2 win in Bridgwater while the Lumberjacks managed only 20 shots on goal for the entire game compared to the Penguins 36.
Finley Diab scored the only goal of the first period to put East Hants up 1-0 after twenty minutes. Owen Cleary tied it for the Lumberjacks on a power-play effort only 31 seconds into the second period. The Pens then scored twice in a span of 1:43 on goals from Logan Durno and Diab with his second of the night to take a 3-1 lead after two periods. The only two goals of the final period were scored on the power-play by Daniel Kline of the Lumberjacks. The South Shore then pulled their goaltender with 1:00 to play but to no avail as Chris Caissie deposited one into an empty Lumberjacks net with 16 seconds left in regulation. Nick Veinot recorded 2 assists to bring his league leading total to 36 while Noah Comeau also added two assists for the Pens who are now 24-4-0 on the season for 48 points. The Lumberjacks fell to 13-13-2 for 28 points.
Membertou 6 Eskasoni 2
It was a tight game with Eskasoni outshooting the Jr. Miners 35-33 but steady goaltending from Lucas Fraser in the Jr. Miner nets allowed the Membertou Jr. Miners to continue their quest for third place in the Rowe Division. Kale McNeil scored the only goal of the first period to put the Jr. Miners up 1-0. The Jr. Eagles showed a little spark to begin the second when Keagan Geizer and Kent Wolodka scored to give Eskasoni a 2-1 lead. The lead was short-lived as the Jr. Miners came back with goals from Drew Baldwin and Ty Oliver to take a 3-2 lead to the dressing room after forty minutes. The Jr. Miners were unstoppable in the third as they rifled how three unanswered goals from Adam and Jarred Hicks and Trey Sturge. Tyler Seymour collected a pair assists for the Jr. Miners while Oliver and Adam Hicks both had an assist to go along with their goal. The Jr. Miners now lead the Strait by 3 points in the race for third place in the Rowe Division.
Valley 5 Brookfield 2
The Maple Leafs won their 10th game of the season 5-2 over Brookfield in Brookfield Saturday afternoon. Aidan MacLeod and Dylan Manning scored 18 seconds apart to put the Leafs up 2-0 after twenty minutes. There was no scoring in the second but the Leafs wanted a good showing as they were coming off a 16-5 drubbing by the Capstone Colts in Shearwater Friday night. In the third, Aidan MacLeod scored his 2nd of the afternoon to put the Valley ahead 3-0 while also collecting an assist before Cam Schurman finally put the Elks on the Scoreboard 18 seconds later to reduce the Leafs lead to a pair of goals. Dylan Manning then scored his second of the afternoon for the Leafs to put them in front 4-1. Duggan Gauthier then scored 30 seconds after for the Elks and Brookfield trailed only 4-2. The Elks pulled their goalie with a 1:00 left in regulation only to see Cam Walsh who had already collected a pair of assists score into an empty net for the Leafs 5-2 win. Owen McDermid collected three assists for the Leafs while Jackson Spraggon collected a pair of assists for the Elks.
