Lumberjacks go up 2-0
It is an ancient sports cliche but “the playoffs are a new season.”
The East Hants Penguins are finding that out quickly as after winning 26 of their 30 regular season games, have now lost twice in their opening two playoff games to the South Shore Lumberjacks who struggled all season to finish with a 14-13-3 record.
Saturday night in Bridgewater where the Lumberjacks went up 2-0 in their divisional semi-final, two players who were heard from very little in the regular season played strong games as the Lumberjacks won 6-3. Evan Amirault who scored only once in the regular season while collecting four assists, scored once while adding two assists and Angus Berry who totalled eight points in the regular season with four goals and four assists, scored twice and added an assist.
East Hants took a 3-2 lead to the dressing room after one period on goals from Connor McNamara, Finley Diab and Noah Comeau’s power-play goal while Owen Cleary and Berry with his first of the game tallied for the Lumberjacks.
The South Shore scored twice in the second period as Ethan MacVicar scored the first of his two goals and Berry adding his second. In the third, Amirault scored his goal and MacVicar added his second. Liam Sylvester collected three assists for the winners and Aaron Lane collected a pair of assists. The Lumberjacks outshot the Penguins 33-29.
The Penguins who allowed the Lumberjacks to come all the way back from a 3-0 deficit last season to defeat them in the playoffs, are certainly not interested in doing the same to the Lumberjacks this year. They would much prefer getting right back into the series next weekend when they host the Lumberjacks in Game 3 Friday night in Lantz at 7:30 before returning to Bridgewater Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. for Game 4.
In other playoff news: The Pictou County Scotians and Membertou Jr. Miners will not play game three in their series Sunday in Trenton. A new revised schedule is presently being worked upon for this series. Port Hawkesbury will play Game 2 of their series with the Jr. Bulldogs Sunday night in Antigonish with the Bulldogs up 1-0 while Game 2 in the Colts-Sackville series goes Monday night in Sackville at 7:30 p.m. with the Blazers up 1-0.
