2 great games in Springhill - Blues and Eagles split

he Eskasoni Jr. Eagles made their annual trip into Cumberland County Friday and Saturday and while no one really knew what to expect from the Blues under new ownership this season, the Jr. Eagles left with 2 points and Cumberland with 3 after the squads split a pair of 5-4 decisions including the opener Saturday in overtime.

In the opener Friday night, the Jr. Eagles Ethan MacInnis scored on the power-play only 57 seconds into the opening period to put the Eagles up 1-0.  Zack Gould tied the game at 1-1 before the opening period concluded.  Jaden Martin put the Eagles back in front 2-1 early in the second before the Blues Alex Griffiths connected on the power-play with 8:13 remaining in the middle period.  Eskasoni’s Daymon Johnson only 59 seconds later gave the Jr. Eagles a 3-2 lead going into the final period.  Dante Basque put the Jr. Eagles up 4-2 with 7:37 left in regulation.  Basque also collected a pair of assists on the afternoon.  With under 4 minutes to play, the roof settled somewhat on the Eagles as the Blues Burke Beed and Zack Chatfield netted markers 34 seconds apart to tie the game at 4-4.  It took only 19 seconds of overtime for Jacob Denny to score the game winner for the Jr. Eagles and give them a 5-4 win.  The Eagles outshot the Blues 31-21.
 
Saturday — Cumberland 5  Eskasoni 4
 
This game was somewhat different as Cumberland County blew the barn doors wide open with an explosive four-goal second period and held off a late rally by the Jr. Eagles for a 5-4 victory.  Jayden Matheson opened the game’s scoring for Cumberland before Jaden Martin scored short-handed for the Eagles with 6 seconds left in the first to knot the game at 1-1.  It was all Blues in the second period as Jayden Matheson scored his second of the afternoon 1:32 into the middle period for the Blues followed by Mats Stone goal 40 seconds later to make it 3-1.  MacKenzie Richard then made it 4-1 Blues before Burke Beed connected for the game winner on the power-play with only 2 seconds left in the second period.  Eskasoni attempted a comeback and did manage to score 3 times in the third with Antle Denny scoring on the power-play and Jacob Denny meeting a pair with under 3:25 but the Jr. Eagles could not score the equalizer and the Blues skated away with the win.  The Blues outshot the Eagles 34-25.

Membertou splits 2 weekend games, Liverpool now 2-2

The Membertou Jr. Miners coming off a 4-0 opening game loss against Liverpool to begin their 21-22 Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League Season at home a week ago didn’t have any more luck as they rolled into Lantz Friday, Oct 8 for their second game of the season.  East Hants struck early and often and by the end of the first period with only 5 seconds remaining, Ethan Wheeler of the Pens scored on the power-play and the goal also proved to be the game winner as East Hants won 6-2.  Robbie Dowell scored a pair for the Penguins, his first being the only goal of the second period.  Other first period goals for East Hants went to Noah Parent and Riley MacDonell.  Nathaniel Fuller scored the only Jr. Miners goal in the first.

 
In the third period, Bailey MacDonald scored 42 seconds into the final frame to bring the Jr. Miners back to within a pair but Dowell’s second goal and another by Gavin McCready gave the Pens their win and improved their early season record to 2-0-0.  Dowell also added an assist to gove him three points on the night.  Grant Sanford was the winning goaltender for the Penguins stopping 25 of 27 shots.
 
Membertou then travelled to Liverpool Saturday night and as we all know hockey is a strange game as the Jr. Miners came out flying scoring four first period goals, forgetting all about their opening two losses and defeating the Privateers 5-0.  The Jr. Miners goal scorers were Ashton Paul, Blake Cox, Nathaniel Fuller who also added a pair of assists, Sam MacKinnon  and Camdon Langlois who scored short-handed.  Spencer Shebib recorded the shut-out for the Jr. Miners stopping all 30 shots he faced.   After two games in a week, the Jr. Miners and Liverpool will not play each other again unless it is in the Nova Scotia Championship Final in April.
 
The Privateers as a result of their 3-1 setback to the Capstone Colts in Shearwater Friday night are now 2-2-0 on the season.  The teams were scoreless after one period before the Colts struck for a pair in the second from Brayden Hooper-Richard and Stephen Warwick’s power-play goal which also proved to be the game winner as Blake Chasse scored the only Privateers goal in the third period.  The final Colts goal came from Tyler Puma into an empty-net with one second left in regulation.

Blazers special teams exemplary against Elks

Goalie Aston Cutten of the Brookfield Elks had to be at the top of his game Monday night in Sackville as the Elks and Blazers opened their 2021-22 Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League Season.  Cutten stopped 45 of 50 shots fired at him but special teams play by the Blazers and lack of offensive punch from the Elks gave the Blazers a 5-2 win.

 
Special teams play was an exemplary performance as they scored two power-play and two short-handed goals.   Daniel LeBlanc and Luc Arsenault scored power-play markers in the opening frame while Mitchell Comeau scored short-handed.  It stood 3-0 after one period and 3-1 after forty minutes after Jacob Bolger tallied for the Elks in the final two minutes.
 
Luc Arsenault who scored the game winner in the first added a short-handed goal with just over six minutes having been played in the final period to make it 4-1.  Sam Rogers then scored for the Elks with 5:56 to play before Donovan Cyr of the blazers scored the game’s final goal.
 
The Blazers are now preparing for their game in Port Hawkesbury Friday Oct 8th while the Elks will not resume play until they visit the Valley Maple Leafs Oct 15 in Windsor.

Wild Flurry of Goals snaps 3-3 tie late

It was a wild finish Sunday afternoon at the Dan K. Stevens Memorial Arena in Eskasoni.  The hometown Jr. Eagles and Liverpool Privateers were locked in a 3-3 draw with only 3:05 left in regulation time when Daniel Kline put the Privateers ahead 4-3.  It took another goal 59 seconds later from Kayden Nickerson, his second of the afternoon which proved to be the game winner.  The Jr. Eagles Thomas Simon then scored his second of the afternoon 18 seconds later to make the game a one-goal affair at 5-4 but the Jr. Eagles were unable to tie the game as Kline with his second of the afternoon and 5th goal of the weekend put one into an empty net to give Liverpool a 6-4 win.  Kline besides his 2 goals also added an assist giving him 7 points in two games during the Privateers road trip into Cape Breton.  Alec Howie also scored once and added a pair of assists while Matt Ormon scored once for the Privateers.

 
Thomas Simon besides his two goals also added an assist and Matt Ormon of the Privateers collected a pair of assists.  Liverpool outshot Eskasoni 41-34.  Both teams are now off until this Friday, Oct 8 when the Privateers visit the Capstone Colts at CFB Shearwater and the Jr. Eagles play their first of two games against the re-launched Cumberland County Blues.

Bilodeau turns away 28 shots for Shut-Out

The Liverpool Privateers and the Membertou Jr. Miners will not have to wait long to play their second game of the season against each other and it should be a dandy after both teams opened their 2021-2022 Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League Season in Membertou Saturday night with the Privateers winning 4-0.

Next Saturday's Oct 9 game will be at the Emera Centre in Queens County at 5:00 p.m.

Eric Bilodeau recorded the shut-out for Liverpool turning away all 28 shots he faced while Daniel Kline was in the right spot at the right time, all the time as he scored 3 times and added an assist.  Kline's first two goals came with less than four minutes remaining in the opening period.  There was no scoring in the second but Kline set-up Alec Howie for Liverpool's third goal with 5:07 having elapsed in the third period.  Kline concluded his hat-trick performance with Liverpool's final goal coming with under seven minutes to play in the contest.

The Privateers will conclude their weekend opening trip to Cape Breton Sunday afternoon when they take on the Eskasoni Jr. Eagles at the Dan K. Stevens arena.
