Jr. Bulldogs record 2 Thanksgiving weekend wins

The Antigonish AA Munro Jr. Bulldogs are undefeated heading into the third weekend of the 21-22 Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League Season.  They rallied for a pair of huge wins Friday, Oct 8 and Sunday Oct 10.   The first came in Windsor Fri Oct 8 when doubled up the Valley Maple Leafs 6-3 after trailing 3-1.  They then went home to Antigonish Sunday Oct 10 and rallied from a  2-0 deficit to take down the East Hants Penguins 7-5.  We will take a look at the game in Windsor first:

In their 6-3 victory in Windsor versus the Maple Leafs, the Jr. Bulldogs did not get off to a great start as they allowed the Leafs to control the play in the opening minutes before the Valleys Brady MacLean was sent off for hooking with 3 minutes elapsed in the first period.  Antigonish was caught sleeping on a line-change when Tyler Boyd left early and allowed Maple Leaf Brayden Hunt sole position of the puck but it seemed to catch Hunt by so much surprise that he had the puck with no one around him, he ended up taking a weak shot on the Antigonish net.  With 4:11 left in the opening period, Andrew McCarron struck on a quick shot which the Antigonish net minder might not have even seen.  McCarron following the goal found himself in the penalty box 18 seconds later.  Antigonish controlled the power-play opportunity they were given and with 2:52 left in the first period, the Bulldogs Fearghus MacDonald tied the game at 1-1 with a shot close in.  The Bulldogs kept applying heavy pressure after their power-play goal until the Leafs just missed with 25 seconds remaining in the first as the puck went in the air and about to drop behind him until it was narrowly knocked away.  The Bulldogs outshot the Leafs 15-8 in the opening period.

In the second period, with 3:35 having elapsed, Justin Banks of the Leafs capitalized after the Antigonish goalie came out of his net and completely misplayed the puck, allowing Banks to take it away from him and put into a wide-open net.  Then with 6:26 gone in the second, Andrew McCarron made a terrific pass to Brady MacLean parked to the right of the Bulldogs net and it was 3-1 Leafs.  It was the last scoring the Leafs would do in the game as the Bulldogs seemingly took control.  The Bulldogs Ben MacLellan flipped a shot from the point with Leafs net minder Durnford being screened and it went over his left shoulder without anyone touching the puck.  Just 42 seconds later Sam Grant tied the game at 3-3 before the Bulldogs went in front 4-3 on a weird goal by Tyler Cross which proved to be the game winner.  With the Bulldogs applying heavy pressure, Cross from inside the dot of the face-off circle from a weak angle shot the puck and it somehow found the back of the Leafs net.  The Leafs Andrew McCarron then took another penalty with 1:09 left in the second out of what appeared complete frustration and Antigonish led 4-3 after two periods and outshot the Leafs 17-12.

In the third period, it was all Bulldogs as they totally dominated the Leafs from scratch and played out a couple of solid hits including the one where Sam Grant of the Bulldogs  hit Brayden Hunt of the Leafs and stretched him out on the blue-line.  The Bulldogs were totally dominant in the opening ten minutes with the Maple Leafs even having trouble touching the puck for the majority of the time.  With 8:30 to play, Darren Waterman made a sensational pass across to Jordan Etheridge who put it into a wide-open Leafs net to make it 5-3 Bulldogs.  By this point, the Leafs had literally disappeared into the ice-surface.  The Leafs tried playing with 6 men for the final 2:30 but nothing happened as Etheridge scored his second of the night ito an empty net with 1:14 to go.  Fearghus MacDonald finished the game for the Bulldogs with a pair of assists to go along with his goal and MxcCarron despite his time in the penalty box also assisted on both Leaf goals to go along with his marker.  Sam Mattie also collected 3 assists for the Jr. Bulldogs. Antigonish finished the game with a final advantage of 50-30 in shots.

Antigonish 7    East Hants 5

This game was controversial with both teams complaining severely about the officiating.  The Penguins jumped in front 2-0 on goals from Devin meagre and Marshall Plandowski 2:10 apart as the opening period approached the mid-way mark.  Then in a span of 1:17, the Jr. bulldogs knotted the game at 2-2 on a power-play goal from Fearghus MacDonald and another from Tyler Boyd.   50 seconds into the second period, Sam Grant scored on the power-play to put the Bulldogs in front 3-2 before Meagher scored his second of the game for the Pens to tie the game at 3-3 again.  The Bulldogs went back in front 4-3 on Ethan Twolans marker and that was the score after forty minutes.  The Jr. Bulldogs went up 6-3 in the third on power-play markers from Luke Baldwin before the period was even a minute old and 1:42 later Fearghus MacDonald scored again for the Bulldogs on the power-play to make it 6-3.  The Penguins were not finished as Riley MacDonell short-handed and Noah Latimer on the power-play connected for the Pens and it was a one goal game again before Sam mattie scored into an empty net with 2 seconds left in regulation to give the Bulldogs a 7-5 win.  MacDonald finished the night with 6 points for Antigonish and Antigonish outshot the Penguins 41-33.

2 great games in Springhill - Blues and Eagles split

he Eskasoni Jr. Eagles made their annual trip into Cumberland County Friday and Saturday and while no one really knew what to expect from the Blues under new ownership this season, the Jr. Eagles left with 2 points and Cumberland with 3 after the squads split a pair of 5-4 decisions including the opener Saturday in overtime.

Friday — Eskasoni 5   Cumberland 4   (overtime)

In the opener Friday night, the Jr. Eagles Ethan MacInnis scored on the power-play only 57 seconds into the opening period to put the Eagles up 1-0.  Zack Gould tied the game at 1-1 before the opening period concluded.  Jaden Martin put the Eagles back in front 2-1 early in the second before the Blues Alex Griffiths connected on the power-play with 8:13 remaining in the middle period.  Eskasoni’s Daymon Johnson only 59 seconds later gave the Jr. Eagles a 3-2 lead going into the final period.  Dante Basque put the Jr. Eagles up 4-2 with 7:37 left in regulation.  Basque also collected a pair of assists on the afternoon.  With under 4 minutes to play, the roof settled somewhat on the Eagles as the Blues Burke Beed and Zack Chatfield netted markers 34 seconds apart to tie the game at 4-4.  It took only 19 seconds of overtime for Jacob Denny to score the game winner for the Jr. Eagles and give them a 5-4 win.  The Eagles outshot the Blues 31-21.

Saturday — Cumberland 5  Eskasoni 4

This game was somewhat different as Cumberland County blew the barn doors wide open with an explosive four-goal second period and held off a late rally by the Jr. Eagles for a 5-4 victory.  Jayden Matheson opened the game’s scoring for Cumberland before Jaden Martin scored short-handed for the Eagles with 6 seconds left in the first to knot the game at 1-1.  It was all Blues in the second period as Jayden Matheson scored his second of the afternoon 1:32 into the middle period for the Blues followed by Mats Stone goal 40 seconds later to make it 3-1.  MacKenzie Richard then made it 4-1 Blues before Burke Beed connected for the game winner on the power-play with only 2 seconds left in the second period.  Eskasoni attempted a comeback and did manage to score 3 times in the third with Antle Denny scoring on the power-play and Jacob Denny meeting a pair with under 3:25 but the Jr. Eagles could not score the equalizer and the Blues skated away with the win.  The Blues outshot the Eagles 34-25.

Membertou splits 2 weekend games, Liverpool now 2-2

The Membertou Jr. Miners coming off a 4-0 opening game loss against Liverpool to begin their 21-22 Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League Season at home a week ago didn’t have any more luck as they rolled into Lantz Friday, Oct 8 for their second game of the season.  East Hants struck early and often and by the end of the first period with only 5 seconds remaining, Ethan Wheeler of the Pens scored on the power-play and the goal also proved to be the game winner as East Hants won 6-2.  Robbie Dowell scored a pair for the Penguins, his first being the only goal of the second period.  Other first period goals for East Hants went to Noah Parent and Riley MacDonell.  Nathaniel Fuller scored the only Jr. Miners goal in the first.

In the third period, Bailey MacDonald scored 42 seconds into the final frame to bring the Jr. Miners back to within a pair but Dowell’s second goal and another by Gavin McCready gave the Pens their win and improved their early season record to 2-0-0.  Dowell also added an assist to gove him three points on the night.  Grant Sanford was the winning goaltender for the Penguins stopping 25 of 27 shots.

Membertou then travelled to Liverpool Saturday night and as we all know hockey is a strange game as the Jr. Miners came out flying scoring four first period goals, forgetting all about their opening two losses and defeating the Privateers 5-0.  The Jr. Miners goal scorers were Ashton Paul, Blake Cox, Nathaniel Fuller who also added a pair of assists, Sam MacKinnon  and Camdon Langlois who scored short-handed.  Spencer Shebib recorded the shut-out for the Jr. Miners stopping all 30 shots he faced.   After two games in a week, the Jr. Miners and Liverpool will not play each other again unless it is in the Nova Scotia Championship Final in April.

The Privateers as a result of their 3-1 setback to the Capstone Colts in Shearwater Friday night are now 2-2-0 on the season.  The teams were scoreless after one period before the Colts struck for a pair in the second from Brayden Hooper-Richard and Stephen Warwick’s power-play goal which also proved to be the game winner as Blake Chasse scored the only Privateers goal in the third period.  The final Colts goal came from Tyler Puma into an empty-net with one second left in regulation.

Blazers special teams exemplary against Elks

Goalie Aston Cutten of the Brookfield Elks had to be at the top of his game Monday night in Sackville as the Elks and Blazers opened their 2021-22 Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League Season.  Cutten stopped 45 of 50 shots fired at him but special teams play by the Blazers and lack of offensive punch from the Elks gave the Blazers a 5-2 win.

Special teams play was an exemplary performance as they scored two power-play and two short-handed goals.   Daniel LeBlanc and Luc Arsenault scored power-play markers in the opening frame while Mitchell Comeau scored short-handed.  It stood 3-0 after one period and 3-1 after forty minutes after Jacob Bolger tallied for the Elks in the final two minutes.

Luc Arsenault who scored the game winner in the first added a short-handed goal with just over six minutes having been played in the final period to make it 4-1.  Sam Rogers then scored for the Elks with 5:56 to play before Donovan Cyr of the blazers scored the game’s final goal.

The Blazers are now preparing for their game in Port Hawkesbury Friday Oct 8th while the Elks will not resume play until they visit the Valley Maple Leafs Oct 15 in Windsor.
